I would like to buy an Notebook. It should be at least 600mhz with >= 128mb RAM and HD of >=15gigs.

I heard, that IBM notebooks are really good (quality). But what about DELL, Siemens Fujitsu, Compaq, HP, Toshiba...

My favorites:
IBM T22.
DELL Inspiration 8100.
Siemens Fujitsu E Serie.

Tell my your experiences with this or other notebooks.
Which one do you recommend?

thx
Tom

My personal preferences run towards DELL and Toshiba.

DELL's notebooks are very good in performance, while Toshibas are quite well made.

I have a T22 at home somewhere....it's a decent machine, but it's just not quite right for me.

There are several manufacturer's which make adequate notebooks but I only consider IBM and Dell to be the very best. Apple also belongs in those ranks but since we're talking PC's we'll exclude Apple.

My favorite models are:
IBM ThinkPad T22 - almost perfect just wish it came with a touch pad instead of only eraser head cursor, the Dell offers both.

Dell - Inspiron 4000 is relatively light and comes feature packed for the average user. The Inspiron 8100 is the new king of the hill and a super speed demon, this is a great laptop however I hope you realize that it's a BRICK HOUSE and weighs a ton. It's great as a desktop replacement but it's not as portable as a 3 pound Sony VAIO laptop.

If you watch the Hot Deals forum closely you'll come across super hot deals like this one. A brand new IBM ThinkPad for $1299 which comes loaded with an Intel Pentium III 800 MHz, 128MB RAM, 20GB Hard Drive, 10/100 Ethernet, DVD, Windows 2000, etc. Awesome laptop, only 5.3 pounds weight, decent speed with Windows 2000 and best of all you can't beat $1299 !!!

Good point RossMAN. I think you just put the finger on why I don't like the T22.

I prefer Dell, they have competitive pricing and feature wise, they cannot be beaten. It's true the 8000/8100 is a monster compared to the smaller laptops out there, but the 15" screen is beautiful and it's the most comfortable laptop I've ever used (I have the 8000). I can safely say I prefer to lug around the extra 2-3 lbs in exchange for a much more pleasant operating experience.

If you are gonna buy a dell, at least save yourself the money, and buy a sceptre. They are EXACTLY the same, because dell ISNT a notebook manufacturer. COMPAL is.

Personaly i'd get a t22. Sure it has no geforce2go, but its a T22 and weighs like 5 pounds

i recently bought a toshiba. nice laptop. man but that apple titanium really looks good.

if i were buying one today, i think i'd go w/ the IBM also, their docking stations rock and they make very good notebooks.

dell's are OK, but not my first choice.

in order of preference for me.

1. IBM
2. Toshiba
3. Dell or Compaq.

I would agree with Platinum Gold's lineup. I had to smile, however, at those who complain about pointing sticks vs touchpads. I find touchpads to be "for emergency use only." That is because when I use a notebook, I rest my hands on the area where the touchpad is, and simply typing, the movement of my hands, causes the cursor to do strange things.

So, regardless of the brand, my preferred pointing device now is the mini-optical mouse (USB & PS2) from Targus.

As for machines that include both . . . Dell does, but only on the Latitude series. Inspirons are T/P only.

you can get compal laptops, by buying sceptre 6600/6900 series laptops which are the same as the insipiron 8000/8100. they are like $100-200 cheaper. quantex used to use the same ones back when they were around. Sceptre even make dell compatible port replicators and docking stations, which are listed on their site

I like IBM's the best, but you have to like a pointing stick. I hate touchpads - but some Dells have both, which is great. You can use them both, or turn off one or the other. Should make everyone happy. But the IBM's still are the "coolest", and are typically built for the long haul. And I have found their support to be beyond outstanding - MUCH better than Dell, who since they outsourced their support hasn't been that great (the support, not the computers).

Dell's tend to self-destruct as they age. Hinges crack, keys fall off, etc. If build quality is important then go with either Toshiba or IBM.
