I'm looking for the easiest way to set up a full featured linux server. Out of the box I want Apache, PHP, MySQL, FTP(server), and Samba all working. So far I'm using RedHat9 and having some issues with the versions it comes with and being too stupid to update to the latest versions of php (not having any rpm's of the latest version). Any suggestions?

www.rpmfind.net, look for the rawhide rpms

or better yet, build php from source. it's not hard. i also recommend using the GNU stow package to manage things you build from source.

i personally like debian for my servers, but you wont get the latest versions of things unless you run "unstable"

I would go with debian, but it won't do that stuff right out of the box. Basically any distro that does that stuff out of the box will probably be a bitch to deal with later on. Just my opinion though.

That's not out of the box though. With your reasoning, debian would be a multimedia powerhouse "out of the box"

It can. I get OpenBSD in a box about every 6 months. It even has pussfy stickers on the outside (and so did my poster case, that barbarian fishy rocks!). Support Debian, buy a cd once in a while.

Debian doesn't make any money from selling them as far as I know. Which I don't really understand that much, but whatever.

They have to make something. The money goes somewhere.

They're a non-profit organization that relies mostly on donated hardware and money.

What I meant was, even though they don't make a profit, they probably make enough to get by on. Or atleast print more cds the next release. Or there would be no point in losing money on printing cds...

Debian doesn't print or sell cd's, other vendors do.

Debian creates and provides its entire distribution free of charge. Debian does not manufacture its own CDs, but relies on 3rd party vendors. To make it easier for CD vendors to provide a high quality disk we provide Official CD images for them. This is the only version that has been fully tested by our testing team and is by far the most popular way to buy Debian.
Some vendors allow customers to pay extra money and donate this to Debian. Others contribute a portion of sales of Debian CDs back to Debian. This is denoted under the entry 'Allows Contribution to Debian.' We hope that you will consider making a donation to Debian.
