Best Overlooked Foreign Films?

Foreign Films don't get a fair shake in this country. The distribution and marketing isn't there and the public won't stand for subtitles and/or bad dubbing. Occasionally, one sneaks through - Das Boot, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Il Postino, The Full Monty & Life is Beautiful for example, but it is a rare event.

What are some great overlooked foreign films that you can recommend?

Bandit Queen is indian right? I remember hearing about that few years ago. Dacoit ppl..

Lagaan is pretty good..it comes with english subtitles. Hey Ram is also good..also comes with english subtitles. It won awards at the Toronto Film Festival.

City of the Lost Children is amazing, and one of my favorite films of all time.

Pretty much any Fellini film is great, too. I especially like his autobiographical film, whose title I can't recall.

The Winter War

No wait, that ain't foreign movie to me ! Anyway, I have talked with several americans who are in to war-movies, and they think that this movie is among the best! I agree with them, but then again, I can't be 100% objective on this one.

Try Chinese films, they're so amazing....helps when you can understand them, yes, but after watching foreign films a lot, you'll get used to the subtitles.

Try "To Live".....very beautiful and sad movie. Note to the ladies: you WILL cry, believe me.

I forgot, the movie Stalingrad is one of the best war movies ever made.

It is about german soldiers who go off to Stalingrad for the glory of the Fatherland and find out Stalin has other plans... It is a wonderful movie that depicts the horror of war as well or better than All Quiet on the Western Front or Saving Private Ryan.
