I have been looking at the Dell m1730 maxed out at about $5000, but how do i know I'm getting my money's worth. What other laptops can I compare to? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

You're not at $5k. You could buy a decent laptop and desktop with that kind of money. I think spending more than $3k is too much. If I had $5k I'd spend it on a nice Alienware, then some sweet accessories to go with it. Expensive mouse if I wanted, another 22-24" LCD to go with it. A bag or something. Extra batteries. $5k man is too much.

I looked at alienware and HP and both seem to compare to the dell give or take a few things like the physics accelerator and blue-ray. List price is at about 4500 for SLI with 4gig ram, nvidia chips with 528, bluetooth, wifi, and 17" screens. The blue ray on the alien was an additional grand. And the physic chip wasn't available on either system.

The amount of memory the chip can use has almost absolutely nothing to do with its performance, are we talking about SLi'd 8600s or 8700s? And physics is mostly a gimmick, modern CPUs can more than handle the processing and lots of games don't support a dedicated PPU. Lastly, never buy a machine with the maximum amount of memory, get the cheapest option, sell said memory, and put in your own 4GB from Newegg or some other e-tailer, it's always cheaper.

Edit: heck, it doesn't really matter if it's SLi'd 86s or 87s, the Go 7950 is still faster than both, for 5K you'd better be getting two of those.

The most common question asked is what notebook should i buy for this or that. Do a little research and you'll find plenty of good models including Dell Vostro 1500, Everex XT5000, HP Pavilion dv9500t. For under $1000 , you can get some amazing systems.

Grab an XPS M1710, it will be cheaper, and still be powerful. I would say you could get a top of the line one for 2500 if you look around. I love mine. Lans have never been easier!

Look at Sager too but go through a good 3rd party reseller for the better customer service. Personally, I think Alienware is over priced and over hyped but thats just my feelings.

Xoticpc.com and look at the Sagers. 2 grand will get you a beast of a machine with an 8800m GTX.

Ok so I looked at Xoticpc.com, I compared sager and asus. When comparing systems customized as close a possible to the same, all three, Dell, Asus, and Sager all come out to be about 4900. So I'm still looking at dell.

I appreciate everyones input though, thanks.

What do you mean they all came out the same? What models were you comparing? And with what specs? There is no reason on Earth why you need the fastest CPU. If you go with the Sager 9261 it comes with a DESKTOP cpu meaning, you can easily replace that CPU with something better if you so wish. And you cannot get dual 8800m GTX's with Dell. Which at the moment is the king of mobile graphics. The 8700m you get with the Dell's is just an overclocked 8600m GT. Also Dell's have horrible build quality and outsourced tech support.

I would recommend a lot more time researching this if you plan to spend 3k on a laptop. Just because the XPS has flashing lights and an Ageia card doesn't make it king. Afterall read the review on Anandtech regarding UT3, pretty much the only game out that takes advantage of that card and results are clearly not worth the price.

Also Asus notebooks come standard with a 2 year GLOBAL warranty and 1 year accidental, you can't find that sort of warranty stock on many if any laptop makers.

But if you are still looking at Dell then go ahead. But there's no point throwing a bunch of money into a laptop that isn't even top of the line.

Replace the C2D Extreme with a Quad core. Cut down the 1920 display as you don't have a hi-def sourace (bluray or hdddvd). No Arctic silver compound. That should put it somewhere in the 3's.

Like I said you don't need the best CPU in the case of 9260 as they are desktop cpus and thus can be replaced later on. And don't waste your money on the Extreme, go Quad
