I recently played around with a latitude e6420. I wasn't a fan of the styling or the ginormous screen bezel but the thing was a brick. There was no flex anywhere and the materials all felt great. I think I could bludgeon someone to death with the thing and still open it up and use it. Too bad 1600x900 screen sort of sucked. It was bright as hell but had the worst black levels I've ever seen. Made watching movies impossible.

Funny, because I own a specialist technology consultancy which spends more in (less than) a year on kit than an enthusiast will likely spend in their entire lifetime on both Apple and everything else.

I personally use everything from a current-flagship-spec Mac Pro all the way down to an 11" Air and I rate them - comparatively speaking in terms of utility in line with my VAIO's, Thinkpads and Elitebooks / Zx00's - about as high as my shoelaces. Designwise of course it's an entirely different story.

Given a student's use, I'm not surprised.

Damn, I have to smoke whatever you're smoking. It's good shit.

Do you do anything but insult people? How about you come up with some real reasons? He gave his reasons, what about yours?

... also, the touchpad is a billion times better on the MBP and IBM/Lenovo are the only ones who ever really got the trackpoint/whatever right. multitouch gestures also makes my life a little bit easier.
..

"Apples are eminently soccer-mom-friendly" sure, they are really user friendly, but they are also eminently powerful for someone who's capable of using a POSIX OS to its fullest.

Agreed on both counts.

I still can't imagine why the PC crowd can't buy, borrow, beg, or steal a decent trackpad.

pc trackpads cannot do real multitouch because ps/2 bandwidth is too low.

windows 8 laptops are supposed to use some other bus for the trackpads...

No, just the Mac-uber-alles and thinks-with-eyes types. And even then, they perceive an insult more than anything else I think, being so wedded to the brand.

How about you come up with some real reasons? He gave his reasons, what about yours?
What would you like to know specifically? Shall we start with the ~>5x (charitably speaking) thicker pile of warranty repair papers I have for Apples vs anyone else?

Anecdotal at best. Far better data sources, including Consumer Reports, indicate fewer problems with the brand than most others. This has been posted so many times and for so many years that I can't really see how anyone can question it.

Even if you don't like CR, arguing "5x" more repairs (hopefully you support at least 5x more Macs by volume than anything else?) is silly.

Why the deuce aren't they using USB to connect? They have to be. I mean, c'mon, it is 2011.

I've already stated - correction, alluded to - what the problem with those data sources are earlier in the thread. They aggregate *all* the manufacturer data. Worthless when in an Apples-to-anything scenario. The premium-consumer-only maker would of course be a shoo-in to those surveys

Irrelevant data does not constitute the 'proof!!! proof!!!' that Mactards always demand when their religion is besmirched.

Then supply proof. So far CR shows Apple's vastly more reliable than the rest.

Just browsing and happened to see this...and I also happened to have looked at CR ratings. They didnt say apple was better, in fact they said that all the brands ended up comparable (but no asus in the survey?).

Personally Ive seen several apple laptops break (sister/brother and a freind), a few with bad hinges and one just seemed to die (wouldnt boot anymore, I tried to fix it). While my dad is still using an old Dell mobile p4 laptop with an ATI 9700 series GPU in it and my mom is using a Dell centrino laptop with an Nvidia 8400m. Ive seen an acer die and a sony as well (again sister/brother, they have an asus thats doing fine now). Had a couple of asus laptops including a refurbed gaming laptop (Nvidia 9800m) thats still going strong 2 years later despite heavy use and being banged around all over the world.

Wouldnt say Im a fan of any one particular brand, but subjectively it seems dell and asus have held up better over time. Asus in particular has put out some firsts in laptops and some interesting models and competitive prices (and the default warranty is great with included accidental coverage). The dells were purchased because of the specs for the money.

Right now dell and asus are at it again. XPS 15 with a 100$ off code (google the latest one) you can get the base unit i5-2410 2.3-2.9GHz 500GB-7.2K 6GB GT525M and great 1080p for 794$ backlit keyboard for 40$ more (834$). You can also check the outlet with a 20% off code.

That base unit for 794$ has a much faster CPU more RAM bigger HDD and a GPU nearly as fast (cool enough to OC faster) as the old Asus gaming laptop while running cooler/quieter having a much better screen (vs a poor 13x7) speakers and chasis (has metal parts) better conectivity and much longer battery life (like 2x). That old asus works great, and this would be better. As long as you dont smash on it with a hammer I dont see why it wouldnt be good.

Theres also this asus gaming unit, i7-2630 2-2.9GHz 500GB-7.2K 6GB GTX460 and 1080p and backlit for 800$ after rebate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834230027 spec wise its "better" than the dell with a better CPU/GPU but its gonna be bigger heavier and even with the bigger battery probably shorter life unplugged (no optimus). Got a rebate hassle and might be overkill and the improved specs probably aint worth the other trade offs to your wife. Personally I think Id take this one...but the difference is really only that this can run the newest games with much higher settings (the dell can still run them OK).

In the 800$ range these are the best Ive seen to date. Ive got nothing against apple, but I dont see them being worth the trade offs (lesser specs/performance and/or more cost). If were were looking at ultraportables things would be different.

In CR's report Apple's have the lowest repair rates (9% vs. other brands at 10-13%). They are more reliable. Thus when people say they repair Macs at 5x the repair rate of others, that calls into question their (anecdotal) evidence.

In the ratings, Apple's 1st in 11" by a wide margin, second place by a small margin (2 points) in 13", and 1st in 15" and 17" by a medium margin (5) in 15" and by one point in 17".

Kinda silly to argue about PC vs Mac when the OP stated that the wife decided against it.

I would still suggest the Samsung Series 7 Laptop; overall customer satisfaction for Samsung Laptops have been fairly high and for $880 you're getting a heck of a spec (decent display resolution, all-metal body, ultraslim bezel, SB i7, 750 Gig HDD, etc.).

All I know is that I used to scoff at people who paid extra for "the same hardware" in a more-expensive laptop, but finally I plunked down the cash for a used Lenovo T60 several years ago. Holy crap, this is now a 5-year-old-laptop, which is still an incredibly versatile and powerful machine today. No problems whatsoever, no crashes, no corrupted data, built like a tank, an IPS screen with viewing angles best described as "any", and a slick fingerprint-based login interface that avoids mistyped passwords or the "peek-over-the-shoulder" effect.

I'm a Lenovo believer now. Fabulous machines. My next laptop will be a Lenovo W520, but only because someone else is paying for it. My T60 still does everything that I want from it, and is a pleasure to type on compared to any other laptop I've used (including the MBP).

I see she was ready to buy a Mac, but no detail on why, what happened, etc...

Right, and the relevance of that to the OP's question is . . .? Regardless, this isn't OT, let's just try to answer the OP's original question, is all I'm saying.

OP: Did you guys decide on a system yet? I will also suggest checking out the Dell Outlet; they have a decent range w/ the same warranty/service as new laptops and it's cheaper on top of that - my XPS 15 is a refurb unit and I also had a chance to toy around with another scratch/dent Dell (Studio 14) but I nor my wife couldn't find anything wrong with it.

It isn't clear what the resolution is or if OP wanted to exclude Macs completely or merely look at other alternatives.

Clarity is awesome.

Sooo, you're saying the OP has 2 possible questions based on the interpretation:

- I do not want "A", what else is there?
- I may not want "A", what else is there?

Way to miss the point there genius. Snarky comment aside, it's out of place in this thread, I apologize - as it is not the ravaged battlegrounds of OT or P&N - I'm genuinely curious as to what the OP decided on. Kinda annoys me when a whole lotta people give great advice and the thread dies there.

That's a snarky comment, certainly. The only thing OP said on the topic is she was ready to buy a Mac - does that mean she wants a Mac, but OP wanted an opinion from the gallery? What, exactly, does that mean? It's unclear.

I'm confused, didn't we already establish that Apple versus all other brands is a near worthless comparison? It's like saying Lenovo versus all other brands is much better, so pick a Lenovo over an Apple. You need data that compares specific brands if you need to make purchasing decisions between specific brands.

Your "data" suggests that Apple has better repair rates than the average PC. Not too much more.

i used to be the same way.... i had even used a few thinkpads borrowed form work on and off. but then my last job got me a W510 as my main machine and I just can't go back.

My new T420 honestly is all I could ask for in a machine. And I know it'll last a while, the only reason i'll upgrade is probably some "itch" to do it when haswell or something comes out.

to the OP of this thread I would highly recommend Lenovo's Thinkpad line. I've never used any of their other product so I can't comment on them. I however own a X220t and have used the R and T series.

I have not foudn any other laptop that compares in terms of pure quality and useability. Sure other brand swill have nice stuff but the whole package is what I'm talking about. Thinkpads will get work down. Plain and simple. They beg for it. Keyboards on them are the best in the industry. The trackpoints and trackpads are stellar. (Especially the trackpoint)

The only reason I like apple products is because of the build method. A solid piece of Aluminum is genius. I wish other companies would do that as well. But I believe you can get more for your money by avoiding the Apple tax.

The thinkpad proves this.

CR's data shows specific brands.

(It's more than just repair records; it's also their recommendations on laptops to buy & use.)
