P4 2.8C, Abit IC7-g Max 3, ATI radeon 9700 NP for gaming, video editing. Whats the best Ram price no object and whats the best Ram for the price with minimal noticeable speed loss. Actually, stability is more important than speed even though I plan to OC (very tame OC).

Thanks,

Joe M.

If you are going to be using it in Dual channel mode you should get the Dual channel kit since they are matched pairs.

Isn't buying two of the same types of Ram the same as buying a matched pair?

Yup. Just for for the same ram.

Absolutley NOT! Matched pairs are just that and if you just buy seperate sticks albeit the same type they are not matched and are not guarranteed to work in a Dual channel configuration. True they will probably work, but you will not get the best timings out of them and if you are overclocking them, you won't be able to go as high.

Example; I bought 2 OCZ PC3500EL sticks from Newegg. They would not do their rated speeds in Dual channel, but if just one stick was in there it was fine. I called OCZ to RMA and he said that they were not part of a Dual channel kit and not matched. (they did however send me a matched pair )

I call BS. I went from a matched pair of Corsair 3200LL to two seperate sticks of Corsair 3500 and get A LOT more speed with the same timings.

Well no kidding you went from 3200 to 3500 and you got alot more speed!

I did not say they would not work I said you will have better results.

But you are talking about using an AMD system, correct? If so that may be the case, but with the enhaced memory architecture of the 865/875 chipsets, having unmached pairs cooperate together is harder than on the Dual channel AMD boards.

I cant really agree with that since I am running Dual channel on my P4P800 with 2 different makes of PC2700,1 crucial & 1 samsung & it works perfectly well in dual channel mode.

When I wrote this I had already pulled the plug. I suppose I could return it when it arrives if there would be a significant advantage to buying more or "matched" RAM. Would 4x 256 Mb be the same as 2X512 or is one better than the other? Is there any need for 1 Gb over 512 Mb for gaming/home video editing and is 2 sticks of 256 in dual channel mode faster than 1 stick of 512 (I assumed this was the case)?

Thanks,

Joe M.

Some will say more is better and some won't. Get what you can afford now. 2X512 would be better if you are going to OC if not then 4X256 would be fine.
