I bought a used 1-port (1 WAN port + 1 LAN port) D-Link off eBay for $10. Then I flashed it with the latest firmware from dlink.com.

I do have many computers, so I use a 16 port 10/100 switch I bought used for $20.

There's no need to spend a lot of money on a fancy router unless you need the features.

Very true. Nice to see an Honest man without hidden agendas.

I would add one adjustment. Buying a 1 port Router forces you to buy a switch. If you are not planning to use more then 4 computers you are better off with a regular 4 port Cable/DSL Router.

However Mr. mustap probably resides in Europe (he is paying with Euro). The price structure and availiability of Computer Hardware is not the same as in the US.

The main difference between the Wired Entry level Cable/DSL Routers is the Firewall "Filtering" system, and number, range etc. of ports that can be opened through the Hardware Firewall.

If you are a gamer, and or use applications that need ports opening, it is an issue you have to look at.

If you need special ports opening for Server, VPN, etc. You have each targeted Router to make sure that it can keep these ports Open.

If you want in general more elaborate Router with better VPN, and SPI capacities you have to look at the Top Models of SMC, Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear.

Otherwise I would go with the lowest price, and the decor

mustap, the Linksys WRT54G has one huge advantage over most others: community software. That is, there's firmware you can get for these boxes that were put together by users/third parties and add features and/or fixes that Linksys didn't have in their firmware. And when Linksys drops the product and moves on to the new thing, the community will be able to keep updating that firmware instead of it being a dead end. So I strongly recommend the WRT54G, because with the third party firmware the feature set and future proofing by far beats other routers.

With only the Linksys firmware, it's an okay box itself - but there are cheaper boxes that will get the job done.

Quick question, if I go with the WRT54GS, can I still use the firmwares created by the community? Or will it only work with the regular WRT54G? Thanks.
