I am looking to buy a new router or hub ( whats the difference ) for under 120$. I have zoomtown adsl, ive been having many problems with the past year with my internet cutting off and slow downloads/high ping. They told me that it could be my hub and said i needed a better one, tis a linksys 5 port work group, model number efah05w. I am going to compusa today and i was wondering what i should get, i would like atleast an 8 port, I have box and two computers hooked up to it.

Do you need wirelss?
if not, you do not have to spend anywhere NEAR $120... I got a GVC router for $45 Cdn with 5 ports on it... it works perfectly, and it's a 10/100 switch also.

I have one too, not a hiccup for 6 months, even over a wireless connection.

Yeah, Hate to sound like a fanboy but I won't buy anything but Linksys for networking.

Another Linksys routers fan. And if you look around you can probably find a non-wireless for less money.

Another vote for the WRT54G. Even if you don't NEED the wireless, the price difference between a good wired and wireless router is so little (maybe $10-$20 depending upon the kind of deals going around) that you might as well go wireless.

Also, with the Sveasoft makes a third-party firmware for the WRT54G router that enables a lot of extra features and tweakability, making it almost equal to a lot of small-business quality routers. Discussion of this firmware.

With all due respect, your question about the differences between a Hub and a Router means that you basically know nothing about Networking and Sharing Internet.

Before you go and buy Hardware that other people like and fit their purposes, you should spend few hours doing some reading so you would understand what is the scope and what you would like to do.

You can start here:

Link to: AnandTech - FAQ. Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing

Link to: AnandTech - FAQ. Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...?

Link to: AnandTech - FAQ. What do I need for wireless Networking?

Ignore the prices in the links above. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.

The Network should look like this: Diagram of Broadband Connection with Cable/DSL Router.

And should be protected.

Link to: Basic Protection for Broadband Internet Installation.

Link to: Internet infestation -Or, how you are getting Internet ?Junk? in and compromise your Computer/Network?

As far as Wired Router.

The main difference between the Entry level Cable/DSL Routers is the Firewall "Filtering" system, and number, range etc. of ports that can be opened through the Hardware Firewall.

If you are a gamer, and or use applications that need ports opening, it is an issue you have to look at.

If you need special ports opening for Server, VPN, etc. You have each targeted Router to make sure that it can keep these ports Open.

Link to: Cable/DSL Routers - NAT & Ports.

If you want a more elaborate Router with better VPN, and SPI capacities you have to look at the Top Models of SMC, Linksys, and Netgear. Each Brand has a higher level hardware for about $120

Otherwise I would go with the lowest price.

I have zoomtown too at home, don't know if it's the same hub/router, but i have the same problems. the connection will just flick on and off every few minutes and the bandwidth is sometimes very low. i got a new ethernet hub and swqitched it with the other hub that plugs into the box that plugs into the wall and it didn't change anything. i think for me anyway it's just a crappy connection
