Best Socket A heatsink/fan?

Hello all. I'd like to really push my Athlon XP Barton 2500+ as far as it can go with air cooling, and I'm not sure which heatsink/fan I should get. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

If you have the money go with the SP-97 cooler which is without a doubt the best air cooler when coupled with a good panaflo fan.

If you dont want that one zip on over to SVC and get a SLK-947U heatsink which is an unbelievably good buy for 20$ whereas at other stores it goes 40 or so.

Also before you order any of those things listed above we need to know what type of M/B you are using. The main reason is whether it has mounting holes or not.

the new Aerocool ht-101 is extremely good, but its large and awkward. with low noise fans, it can outperforme even the SP-97 however if your willing to deal with the nouse, the SP-97 is still top dog.

Coolmaster ripped off the Aerocool designs and made the "hyper 6", its even larger but it outperformes even the Aerocool.

They are both, apparently, extremely hard to mount without smearing the thermal interface material due to their size, so mounting it can take serveral tries.

as stated though, the SLK-947U@$20 is the best bang for the buck though.

from what cam be seem from the XP-120, it can only outperform the SP-97 with lower CFM. when you crank up the speeds they performe the same.

however, its still a pre-production model. if they made the beast out of copper....oohhh boy....

I totally agree with the SLK, but the Vantec AeroFLOW is definitely worth a look also... I believe at about $25..

Almost silent, keeps my 1700+ @ 2.4 around 46-50C loaded..

Arizona summers are hot..

I'm using an Albatron KX18D Pro II mobo. It's been awhile since I've opened my case, but I don't think it has mounting holes.

I'm too lazy/tired to check at the moment.

As for the SP-97--the thing looks monstrous enough for the job, but I'm not really willing to pay $60 for a heatsink. Something around $20-30 would be ideal.

i picked up my SP-97 for $40 + shipping. but then you still need to buy a fan.

if noise isn't a problem, the Volcano 12 is honestly the champ for bang for the buck. however it performes poorly at low RPM, and when the RPM is cranked up,its VERY LOUD. the high grade fan makes up for what the heatsink lacks. you can get it for $30 most anywhere.

The Thermaltake SLK is the way to go, IMO. I use the 900A (I believe) which is held on with clips and have not had any problems. I use a quiet 92 mm fan. Nice set up.

Noise is absolutely not an issue. My case is already loaded with fans--four 80mm fans for intake/outtake, two fans in the power supply, plus the heatsink/fan I already have. Noise doesn't bother me.

So, with the Volcano 12, will I be able to push my Barton 2500+ to 3200+ speeds (400 Mhz FSB)?

Isnt the xp-120 only for intel systems? One for AMD systems would be nice

I like the Aeroflow a lot too.. but I had one on my old P4 and it wasnt what I'd call quiet.. but who knows the Athlon one might be different

a nice looking cooler with a sweet design nonetheless.

Everyone is forgetting the venerable, and awesome PAL8045. It is one of (if no the best) in reverse-flow coolers, and at 29.00 dollars, is a steal. For air cooled rigs and overclocking, I wouldn't use any other. In reverse flow, you also cool the motherboard, which leads to better overclocking, and when vented outside, gives free airflow across the board and RAM. The downside is slightly elevated temperatures when compared to this same cooler, in normal-flow mode, but it's only about 1-2 C., while at the same time dripping the mobo temps 3-5 C. for a great tradeoff!! If you don't FSB OC then, then the SP-97 is the ticket in my opinion. Otherwise, the PAL8045 or the Scythe Kamakaze (the Kamakaze is a pain to install).

Dans Data also has reviewed a wierd heat pipe cooler that requires you to run the cooler vertical, but the results are shocking, beating some water cooling setups. It's not cheap, and you have to use it upright, but damn! It rocks!

i highly recommend the Volcano 12 then. i managed 2.6ghz with it no problem. its on par with all the pricey thermalright solutions due to its high grade fan.

two things to consider though, IT IS LOUD,i'm not sure you understand how bad it really is,its over 50dB.

its also very, very heavy and clips onto the socket rather than mounts. that scares most away however i had no problem with it when i was moving my stuff around at college.

if those two things don't bother you i'd say its the best bang for your buck out there for $26:

You might want to go with Thermalright SLK947U as others have mentioned. The best part is that it fits both AMD sockets and Intel P4 sockets so easier to resell when you upgrade.

You might want to stay away from the XP-120 because of the sheer size that you may not be able to install it and it weights 220g MORE than the SP-94. You can easily damage your motherboard over a period of time (weight stress) especially if the mobo is in a vertical tower.

" its primarily aluminum construction (the base and heat pipes are nickel plated copper) makes it feel feather-light, which it almost is, comparatively speaking, weighing in at almost 220 grams less than the SP-94."

my volcano 12 lived on the SOCKET for 5 months(through moving in and out of boston for college),and it weights 750grams. never a problem. if its braced to the motherboard it certainly won't ever be a problem, even the socket is safe.
