Looking to get a small TV (aka, a large computer monitor for cheap). Confused about whether I should invest in LED or LCD. Which TVs have good response time, input lag, and good value? It seems like Sony destroys the competition when it comes to response time and brands like Samsung have high input lag. Need recommendations. THanks!

Whatever TV you get, make sure it has some type of "Game Mode" that turns off all the extra processing that creates lag.

This. I got a 40" Samsung (120MHz) that has this feature and it helps. Gaming is pretty smooth but I have no idea if it really is all that good in FPS shooters were lag will destroy you. I don't play them much on the TV.

But I will say that I have considered picking up a 27-32" Monitor with 1-2ms response time for shooters and when I would rather sit in my comfy office chair than on the sofa.

Check out Youtube for more ideas. Lots of great recommendations there.

"LED" is a backlight technology. Alternatives are CCFL (dead) or... nothing. On a computer, this changes brightness.
"LCD" is the actual tech making pixels changes colors. Alternatives are Plasma and OLED. Neither of those have a backlight. Neither of those are available for cheap in TVs.

If you're concerned about lag time, google the name of a TV model + "Leo Bodnar". You should get *actual* ms response times which are important for gaming (and make sure they compare with gaming mode on and off). Gaming mode on will lock out some picture setting adjustments needed for color accuracy if you care about that kind of thing (if this TV will also be used for watching movies and such).

Budget! Why does nobody ever give their budget in these threads. Makes recommending things so much easier.

You didn't give size range either.

Like the others said, LED is just a back-lighting technology. Makes for thinner screens and sometimes more even lighting depending how the diodes are arranged. ie edge lit vs matrix.

Normally I'd recommend IPS but while they have better image quality, they're a bit more laggy. I don't find this a problem but I don't play competitively. You'll probably want 2ms or less response time.

This 24'' Asus for $270 doesn't look too bad.

Here's the 27'' version sans speakers.

For actual TVs, I'd look at plasma displays. Super fast response time. Much better than LCD. Since they're being phased out, you can get them pretty cheap these days.

Asus and BenQ's are nice monitors for gaming, their TN panels however are ugly with the inaccurate colors though (there's guides on getting them fixed up).

You can find a 1ms response IPS which should be good, my LG 22" is 1ms. My BneQ 24" is 2 or 5ms and there's not that big of a difference (not noticeable enough for me).
