Best website for Reviews?

I've been a long time reader of ign, but I find that the reviews there are hit or miss and often times they get it all wrong about multiplayer oriented games. I'm looking for a new website for game reviews that is perhaps a bit more down to earth, perhaps written by hardcore gamers, and not so much for casual gamers.

I've read Gamespot as well, and find it to be no better than IGN. Does anyone know of a really solid game review site that gets it right most of the time?

Combination of websites + early adopters that get burned or have a good time is what i base my game opinions on. Also wikipedia! Wiki is great as it gets straight to the point mostly.

metacritic.com base its scores in a collection of various scores from different sites and magazines. IMO its the closest you'd get to 'accurate' after forming your own opinions based on the various reviews without playing the actual game yourself.

Currently I think Eurogamer has the best reviews, they've been very accurate with regard to my opinions on games.

Gamespot sucks. I've been a subscriber of theirs for about 3 years now and they've always been behind on the big stories, hardly pay any attention towards non-prime time B-Class developers (I.E: Those that aren't EA or Activision-Blizzard), and they always screw up video formats which end up in the removal of many of their videos only to never be replaced thus forcing me to go to websites such as Gametrailers or even YouTube :/

Your own judgment should be better than any so called professional reviews.

that's the problem though, reviews are supposed to give you an idea before you buy the game.

Which is something that they often fail to achieve for me. I tend to buy the games if I'm not sure, then if I don't like them I often return them for a refund, and it works for about 9 games out of 10 I want to return. I do keep some of them but they just take the dust. In the end, for me, the best way to know if I like a game or not is to try it, not just reading a subjective review.

gamrankings.com takes every review for the game and puts it on a scale of 0-100.

For example if gamepro gives a game a 4/5, that equals and 80/100 which is then average with the other source reviews for the game.

Then why do you subscribe to them?

1up.com is good, and EuroGamer.net is better. They're the only review sites I read anymore. GameSpy/Ign/GameSpot are all way too business influenced these days.

I like IGN because gamespot USED to be good (anyone ever try going to gamespot these days? All the reviewers are ppl u didn't know prior to them firing Jeff) but Jason Ocampo moved to IGN PC now.

Giant Bomb is good. I also really like Zero Punctuation.

I'm not sure I really like 1Up. I get EGM (for free...till like, 2012 or something?) and Games For Windows (free as well) and the reviews aren't all that great, so I figure 1Up wouldn't be any better.

UPDATE: Well...I guess GFW isn't in print anymore. Maybe that's why I haven't seen an issue in a while.

I'd like to know who lets you return games once open....?

The major sites like IGN, Gamespot, and PC Gamer are obviously biased. They never give a bad score to a highly anticipated big budget game, especially if it's an exclusive early review.

For multiplayer games I found reviews pretty useless. Your average game journalist isn't going to spend nearly enough time with the game. Your best bet is to wait a month or so after the game comes out and see what the community has to sayl

Unfortunately game reviewing companies are swayed by $$$

Just look at Far Cry 2. They can't possibly give that game a 9's and 8's.

A lot of stuff *used* to be good. I *used* to have a subscription to PC Gamer from 1996 up through about 2002, when the writing just became utter shit. Then I cancelled it. Because it wasn't good *any more*.

EGM is reliable. They've discussed in their magazine how certain companies withdrew advertising dollars after handing out poor reviews on a game. I remember Shoe even stated the names of the companies in one of his editorial columns. I think Ubisoft was one of them.

^Good point about EGM's trustworthyness. When Sony was telling reviewers they had to exclude mention of MGS4's legnthy cutscenes, EGM told Sony to shove it.

If you're looking for well-rounded, impartial, intelligently-written articles, I like Gamefly and 1up (although I would list IGN here too). Granted, the best reviews often don't come out until well after the game is released e.g., Tomshardware.

Gamespot used to be good before the Kain & Lynch debacle and subsequent exodus of talent. It's a bunch of fluff now and their objectivism is highly suspect.

Gamerankings is probably the best review averager. It's worth noting that Metacritic, like Gamespot is owned by CNet Networks and the timing and inclusion of review sources is also suspect imo.
