I'm an enthusiast but I'm not enthusiastic about that price.

How long before somebody posts machine specs with 2 of those in SLI?

I could afford to buy two of those, but it will be a cold day in Gehenna before I do. Anything that could make use of that much VRAM would lag the GPU(s) terribly.

Not necessarily. Nvidia has retuned the memory controller to properly address the extra memory with a minimal performance impact, without this the added memory would have introduced additional latency, hampering performance.

Of course there is not a need. There's also no need to OC, use phase exchange coolers, peltiers, mod cases or have UV reactive fans. It's the luxury of having the next thing out there and getting more future proof products. ATI shows that their 512 MB version of the X850XT increased performance up to 20% in the top games like HL2, Doom 3 and Far Cry. BFG says their card gets similar results.
Edit: ATI actually says it increases performance 20-30% in those games at 1600x1200 with 6xAA and 16xAF.

The reason why it would be insanely stupid to buy one of these is that next generation video cards are just round the corner. And erven though it might give 20-30% at 1600x1200 6xAA 16xAF I suspect that the 100% increase in price just isn't worth it for anybody except those who have unlimited funds.

That's the point. The people who can afford this card with SLI are just going to grab the next gen card when they come out too and sell off the 6800. Just because someone pays what seems to be a lot of money to you, does not make them stupid. If everyone had the attitude of "I'll just wait for the next generation product to come out", no one would ever upgrade, there is always a better technology on the horizon. Besides, the Next generation products at 512MB are going to be just as much money, if not more, than this 6800 Ultra. I can't wait to see AT do an SLI review on these bad boys.
