About a month ago, my computer case would randomly start emitting an extremely high pitched whine. It's almost the most annoying sound I've ever heard. Actually, it was not completely random, it seemed to happen during high loads especially during games. Well, a good thump on the case was a temporary solution and at that point it was not happening constantly. Unfortunately, the problem continued and I eventually opened up my case and realized the whine was from my video card. I have a BFG GeForce 7800GS OC and I am almost certain the whine is coming from the card's fan. At first, I just used some canned air to blow all the dust out of it (I've had the card for about 9 months now, since it was released earlier this year). That solved the problem for a day or 2, but the whine came back. At that point, I removed the card, unscrewed the cover on the fan/heat channel thing, and squirted a little WD-40 on to it. I realize that might not have been the best idea, but I was desperate. Again, this solved the problem for a couple days, but now it is back and worse than ever.
It will make the whine at almost any time now. When it's not during a game, a tap on the case will make it go away for a while, but it will always come back. If I'm playing a game it will be much more frequent. Has anyone had experience with this kind of problem before? What should I do? I don't want to get a new video card, but I guess I will if I have to.
