I assume a large part of the calculus here is the idea that the more regular people hear and see Trump again the less they'll like him instead of effectively imagining him as kind of a vessel for their own views again.

I think that is the overwhelming part of the calculus and it's a great idea. The more people see Trump the less they like him.

I also think the average American has not seen Trump speak recently or at least not at any length. He is constantly slurring words, saying outright gibberish, or losing his train of thought and sort of trailing off into nonsense. He seems very unwell.

This is because he's almost certainly getting advice from people to not debate Biden.

Yup - and when Biden doesn't agree Trump will try to spin it as 'both candidates' declined.

I'm sure Trump has been told not to debate at all for obvious reasons but I hope he at least does one. Biden will destroy him (or, more accurately Trump will destroy himself).

I think the problem for Biden is that while his mind is still sharp, his body is clearly showing all the signs of being, actually, as old as he his. This is not a good thing when the Silent Generation is essentially gone and large numbers of boomers are dead or more interested in what's for lunch at the nursing home (yes, I exaggerate a bit). So, I tend to agree that a debate doesn't sound like a good plan. Trump's supporters are fine with the idea that he may have to be president with an angle bracelet (or whatever) - so how he doesn't matters not to them. If he says he won the debate, then he won the debate

I'll put the odds of them even happening at 50/50. I still think Trump will probably back out if he doesn't get them to change the rules, format, or moderators according to his wishes. Fake news media is being very mean and nasty to your favorite president. Debates rigged for sleepy Joe.

Getting both sides to agree on debate rules, without the presidential debate commission setting them, is going to be hard. I'd agree with at best ~50% chance they really happen.

One example already before this is even hours old: both Trump and Biden's camps have been quoted that they only agreed to a one-on-one debate, meanwhile CNN is claiming the rules will be set such that Kennedy can easily qualify (with one more poll and getting on ballot in a few more states).

Also, Trump claiming he wants the hugest audiences in person, while CNN/Biden stating the first debate will be TV only, no in person audience.

To an extent you make a point but I would contend what will be far more influential to independents (and true GOPers, not the MAGA cultists) is seeing a babbling mentally confused Trump head to head against a Biden who can still drill down deep for twenty minutes on any of a multitude of significant issues. Smart move on Biden's part in my view.

BTW the news article I read says Trump told Salem Media host Hugh Heweitt he accepted and will debate with any moderator. Maybe he won't weasel out, I don't trust anything he says.

As I said it was smart for Biden to get ahead of this topic. I think he has to debate Trump, if the rules are simple and reasonable. I'm quite certain Trump will look insane and Biden will just look old and ok. But yeah, I have to agree the odds of the Trump campaign agreeing to these rules is slim to none. But Trump is so chomping at the bit to debate Biden because he is convinced no matter what he will win, he might override the more reasonable people running his campaign.

it looked like trump was struggling really badly just looking at it…

What do you critics aim to achieve. Are you simply shitting on people for a sense of relief. What's the drug you are on. Do you think people will change by insulting them. It's no skin off my nose one way or the other. Just offering a chance for some selfappraise. I suggest stop looking at people as superior and inferior and look at them as having had life exieriences purely by accident that make one person more aware of the other. It is the job of the more fortunate to help the less fortunate if you are a liberal. There isn't anybody you can criticize that isn't you in different circumstances going both ways.
