"Deleted some files"? What does that mean exactly?

Your best bet is to run a repair install of XP to replace whatever critical files were deleted.

Boot into console using your Win XP CD, try doing fixmbr?

This will probably override Fedora's bootloader.

Wrong!!

Anyway ... I am assuming you used something like Grub/Lilo as your boot manager? In which case one of the files you may have deleted is the loader, or it could be the conf file that configures it.

XP needs to be the active partition to boot and this is made possible by the conf file.

Fix MBR may get your XP back, but not your loader to get into FC. Better to perhaps boot with a Linux Live CD and fix the loader.

Which were you using as your boot manager?? XP or Grub/LILO/whatever

I think it is GRUB

It asked for my admin password but i forgot it.

What should i do to get my password?

Nope its not GRUB - sounds exactly like the XP recovery should be.

If you have never set an admin password it will be blank so just hit enter again. If you have set one at some point and forgotten it then its going to be a whole lot more complicated

Just to give you a heads up the recovery console will likely restore the MBR to whatever msft thinks it should be. If the primary boot loader is a linux (lilo/grub) or 3rd party (xosl) you are going to have some problems.

Put in the WinXP install CD, reboot the computer, select the repair install. This will replace the core operating system files that are needed to get back into WinXP.

The rootnoverify (hd,0) and Chainloader +1 lines are from GRUB.

Since WinXP will fixmbr, it will be necessary to use the FC install cd later to regain access to FC. You then have your choice of boot utilities. You can maintain WinXP's boot utility by copying the needed file from FC into WinXP and then putting an extra line into WinXP's system startup routine OR you can reinstall Grub. The choice is yours.

No, his message says that he deleted "dome files." Everyone knows that you should never delete dome files, unless you want to mess up your bootloader.

In all seriousness, I agree that he should repair install XP and then reinstall linux on top of itself. Everything should then be OK, and all of his files should be intact. However, he should definitely back up the drive before doing the reinstalls.

go to your BIOS and look at the first page. it should list your devices. primary master device, primary slave device, secondary master device, and secondary slave device. now pick whichever one is your hard drive you're booting in to. change the access mode to "LBA". i had this very same issue and this fixed it, now grub/lilo can boot in to windows without that message. although yesterday i updated my bios and i didn't have to set it to LBA.

Did you run a repair install or just go to the recovery console?

To do a repair install of XP, DO NOT USE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE. Follow these directions, or google for something like "repair installation Windows XP"

XP Repair install

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, read this Warning#2!
6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

If you get files not found during the copying stage.

Blaster worm warning: Do not immediately activate over the internet when asked, enable the XP firewall before connecting to the internet. You can activate after the firewall is enabled. Control Panel - Network Connections. Right click the connection you use, Properties, and there is a check box on the Advanced page.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-011
7. Reapply updates or service packs applied since initial Windows XP installation. Please note that a Repair Install from the Original install XP CD will remove SP1/SP2 and service packs will need to be reapplied.
