Does anyone know what the largest tape capacity is for an IDE trape drive? The largest I've seen is the 10/20 GB for the Travan drives, but I was hoping there may be something a bit larger, maybe up to 30 or 40GB per tape. Anyone know for sure??

You can get an Onstream 15/30giger IDE but Those were flakey and from what i know the company was either bought out or filed for chapeter 11. With that said. The only one i would recommend is the Travan 10gig. You won't even get 20gigs on the compressed ratio(maybe 15 to 17 gigs) so don't rely on it as a standalone 20giger. I am actually going to pick up a refurbished 10/20gb Travan from my shop for only 149 dollars. Compared to 260 to 300 dollars brand new, i think its deal digging in the garbage.

For 35-40GB/tape you're looking at DLT4. (SCSI) Or Exabytes Mammoth drives that are based on 8mm technology. Talking $3K+ for the drives + controller and $70 or so per tape.

I heard about the Onstream drive and was kinda excited about them, but I had a tough time finding places that would sell them...didn't know about the company's problems though...

exactly my point bozo...backup's not THAT important just now, and i'm definitely not gonna spend $500+ on a tape, controller and media. I'll be tossing my 440BX board w/ PIII 450 for either the A7V133 w/ TBird 1400 or A7V266 (if it ever exists!) w/ RAM and TBird by towards the end of August and that kind of money could definitely go into a good ddr solution instead.

From what I've seen, it is usually cheaper to buy a new HD than to buy even a single tape. That doesn't include the cost of the tape drive! If its just for backup, get the cheapest generic brand HD (who cares about the HD speed for a backup) and save the cash for something better.

If you want tape, go for SCSI.

Best for your $
Sony TSL-S11000/SB 320GB DDS-4 Autoloader

Fastest you can get
IBM 100/200GB LTO Autoloader(Seagate have it too.)

Hope this help.

In all honesty i can't justify a Tape Drive tha cost just about the same or even more than my system config in price. If you spent 1100 dollars on your systems altogether, would you really spend another 500 just on a tape drive?
