Sorry to rant but I just wanted to know how many other people think that BioShock sucks.

I'm still running a P4 3.0GHz (OC'd to 3.6), an X1950 PRO 512MB, and 2GB DDR2 533, but could still play the game on high settings @ 1680 x 1050. Unlike a lot of other FPS games, even though I could only achieve an average of around 35-40 FPS most of the time the gameplay still felt smooth. And even though I only played it in DX9 mode, I couldn't really tell a big difference between DX9 and DX10 when comparing screenshots anyway.

In the graphics department I thought the game looked a little cartoonish and over the top. The gameplay felt like just what it is, a crappy port of a console game. Even after fixing the horrible FOV and mouse acceleration I still found it difficult to aim properly which just made fighting enemies frustrating. On top of this the absence of a walk key is unacceptable. I thought the player speed was WAY too fast. I felt like I was playing that old FPS game GORE. I slowed the player movement speed down through the ini files but after doing this, starting was sluggish. I tried every combination of the "SpeedBase" and "Speed" commands but nothing worked it was either too fast with no sluggish start or no sluggish start but the movement was too fast. Had this game taken place outside in wide open areas the fast movement may have been okay, but the first two levels that I acutally did play were all inside and I just didn't like it. You can move slower by crouching but there's no option to lower the viewbob so when you're crouching the whole screen moves side to side and gets annoying fast.

All in all, this game was just like Stalker, a big hyped up letdown with crappy gameplay. Truthfully, the last time I was completely blown away by a game was when I played FarCry for the first time. Let's hope it's little brother Crysis does the same. After FarCry I'd have to say Doom 3 was the most impressive, and then Half-Life 2. Half-Life 2 would have trumped Doom 3 but I thought the airboat and buggy drving made HL2 tedious and boring.

Maybe I'm just picky when it comes to games, but all I can say is that I think BioShock is a piece of garbage and I doubt I'm the only one that feels this way.

Let me know what you think.

Pretty sure you're alone in the world.

I've never heard a single bad opinion of the game. Not sure what you expected going into the game, but it was never meant to be a FarCry or a Half Life 2.
Do you want guns blazing and only guns blazing? The airboat and buggy driving were actually fun moments in Half Life 2, they gave added depth.
And Bioshock is not strictly an FPS, but has strong elements of an adventure title with RPG elements.

Loved STALKER.

Can't seem to continue BioShock. Have only played a couple hours of it since release. I feel like I've experienced all the gameplay already and all that is left is graphics.

The problem with Bioshock I found is not enough to give it a 10/10 rating ,reviewers must be on crack don't know how any reviewer can give it a score that high, old classics like System Shock 2 were way better, the trouble I had with activation and sound problems(I was not alone)not to meantion a short game etc..its not a terrible game but far from perfect.

A game that is well overrated IMHO,I have lost all faith in online reviews. You'll always get people and reviewers trying to make the game sound better then what it is,I have to call Bioshock as I played it from end to finish.

If there is ever an expansion I'll make sure to only buy it when its in the bargain bin price range.

One word fits Bioshock for me,overatted.

Stop hyping things. I didn't read anything about Bioshock at all. I didn't even know it took place underwater, but I knew it was from a company I like and it was a genre that I like, so I got it. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I don't care for the consolish respawning enemies. And the enemy animation is terrible. They move so fast they just look like they are on skates or something.

the only people who don't like Bioshock are those who don't value atmosphere, story, character development, etc. over "other priorities". Trying to say Doom 3 or FC are far and away better games is pretty laughable, both had mediocre stories with no overarching theme, just shoot 'em ups.

But hey if that's your thing then so be it. You have to try a little harder in Bioshock, enjoy exploring and can invest yourself emotionally into the game. If you're not capable of doing this, then you won't get much out of it and I suggest you stick to vanilla shooters.

I almost laughed at your post until I knew you was actually being serious  ,you want the above I suggest you try System Shock 2,something that game is far superior to Bioshock, sad that standards and reviewers for gaming (including Bioshock) has dropped.

I have SS1 and 2, both of those had serious flaws as well as did Deus Ex. You had problems with DRM and sound which detracted from your experience, I didn't have these issues.

Short? It's 20 hours to finish which is about average, if you finished it in much less time then you cheated yourself.

I will reiterate what I originally stated if you were disappointed then you either set unrealistic expectations(this applies to you) or you have priorities that differ from Bioshock's strengths.

People also have a tendency to view beloved games from the past through rose colored glasses and what I found appealing as a twenty year old isn't going to give me the same satisfaction now; the opposite is also true.

We should be thankful that there are even people out there who have the balls and ambition to make games like this instead of the standard EA BF garbage or other absolutely mediocre games retreading the same ground over and over again.

Crysis is going to be a technological marvel with great gameplay but are you going to care about the characters? No. Will you ever have to make a moral choice? No. Will you ever be even slightly emotionally invested in any aspect of the game? No.

You will do what you do in 99% of the games out there, kill enemies like a mindless zombie.

I'm pretty much the complete opposite. BioShock has been one of the best games I've played in a long time. I also loved STALKER.

I hated Farcry, DOOM 3, and thought HL2 was mediocre at best.

After reading some more posts, especially the one by Ayabe (he really hit the nail on the head), I have to say that it was the story that really grabbed me for this game. This is something that most games these days lack. The game is definitely not without flaws, but they are not game breaking.

Bioshock is the type of game that will either be loved or hated.
I played the game, and enjoyed the crap out of it.

I can't believe people still disparage STALKER ... one of my all-time favorites ... just takes a little 'getting into'. Anyway, I have downloaded (via STEAM) BioShock, and it just finished. Too bad I still have 6.5 hours of work left today

Can't wait!

The OP had my interest until he said Doom3 was impressive.

If he thinks Bioshock sucks then I definitely need to get it.

20 hours you say,I finished it in 15 hours at most, now I could probably stretch the game for another 5 hours but to be honest would not want to,even 20 hours is short IMHO.

I still find it funny how people can rate this game so high

Haha, I didn't know it was under water either! I knew there was buzz surrounding Bioshock, saw the reviews, and picked it up not having a clue what to expect. So far I'm enjoying the game. Not blown away, but it's interesting enough to keep me plugged in. Think it found its niche somewhere between Condemned and Jedi Outcast, for me.

Sure it's not perfect, I wish there were a larger variety of enemies. Some of the fetch quests left me slightly bored. The "Good" ending didn't really do it for me, but the "Bad" ending is 10 times better. But I never played for less than 4 hours everytime I fired it up and am about to start my third run through the game as I'm convinced there are still things I haven't seen.

I wouldn't rate the game a 10/10 more of a 9/10 with pretty much every other shooter in the last 5 years hovering around a 6 or 7/10. Such assignments are arbitrary IMHO except to demonstrate how far above I consider this game compared to anything that has come around in the last few years.

I wouldn't rate the game that highly either in terms of storyline. The gameplay, when it comes to shooting is up there though.

I think the story is interesting but uninspired. It does not unfold in a way that is particularly engrossing, although that could be difference of opinion, like some enjoy one movie vs another.

The controls are awkward as well, it is hard to aim for some reason.

The graphics are a mix of good atmosphere and artwork and horrid textures.

I had high expectations for the game, the only reason it should get a 9/10 is that number is relative; in comparison with recent games.

Story, mediocre execution but good premise
Graphics, good and bad, sorry but the 2002 texture quality is just sloppy as hell and annoying
Controls, not too terrible but a bit awkward
Sound, very excellent

The game is worthy of a 90% score, not 100%. But, then again, is ANY game worthy of 100%? Not likely.

IMO, BioShock brought back the 'game' in computer games. It was genuinely fun, very well polished and feels very alive!

Now, this is based on the DEMO... I'll be getting the game shortly. It is the ONLY demo that has kept my interest in the game.

Reviewers are giving this game a 100% BECAUSE most games that have come out in the last few years have been terrible. So the 100% score is RELATIVE to other crap shoot games. When you have hit rock bottom and have been there for a long time, moving up a few feet seems like you reached the top!

If the 'average' game were like BioShock, then BioShock naturally, would get a 75%-80% review... Ok, beating a dead horse, but my point is that the score was relative due to crappy games we have been getting lately.
