Think about how the military clears a building or a city...if you don't establish security behind you, guess what, the bad guys come back in and take the rooms you previously cleared.

The "citizens" of Rapture most certainly should be able to travel freely across the city just as your character does, and thereby populate rooms and areas already "cleared".

What I think is great about Bioshock is that if you hack all of the turrets and security cameras, you are essentially providing some security in previous areas...so you can just sit back and let Rapture's defenses provide you with more money, supplier and ammo.

Exactly right on all counts. I like to try something different every now and then, and BioShock delivered.

I also agree.

To anyone saying that the gameplay sucks...I'm baffled. I've played through the game 3 times now (on hard) both in PC and 360, each with widely differing choices and plasmids / weapons.

If you think the gameplay sucks...you are not getting it.

Sure, I'll admit that it isn't perfect, but I didn't expect it to be. That doesn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying the game as it exists.

I guess I aimed too high, bugs etc not withstanding there was just not enough for me to play the game for long periods at a time(you know how some games get you hooked and you can't put them down ,well Bioshock is not one of them),I had to play it in short periods at a time, there are a lot better recent games out there and nothing you say will change that.

Geez mem, it's like you're bashing for the sake of a good bash here. It's okay that you don't think much of BioShock, really it is.

I still find it funny how people can rate this game so high

I hope I'm not the only person who's said this to you, but, I rate it highly because I LIKE it.

As I said I came away with mixed feelings about the game,I just can't see how they can give this game 10/10 etc..if you like the game a lot that's fine by me(since we all like and expect different things from games etc),however I was trying to figure out how most reviewers can give this game a perfect score.I actually stopped posting in this thread until you meantioned my name .
Remember I' not having ago at you guys,we are all just posting our feedback ,comments about the game.
Anyway happy Bioshock gaming,I've moved on now to playing other games ,btw got my pre-order in for Jericho .

I understand that you aren't quite satisfied with BioShock, mem. I get that. You didn't say "10/10" at first. Your exact words were:
I still find it funny how people can rate this game so high.
And you certainly didn't make clear that your comment only included reviewer takes on the game. These things prompted me to respond because I rate the game highly, and this place is all about opinions, right?

The gameplay felt like just what it is, a crappy port of a console game

Unfortunately, it wasn't a port of a console game. Both versions developed by different teams.

After FarCry I'd have to say Doom 3 was the most impressive

-10 Credibility.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I'm not sure I shared the same problems you did. I first completed the game on the 360 on medium and had no problems. I then tried again on hard, and the 360 controller just didn't give me the accuracy I needed.

So I got it for PC and started playing on hard, and it's a blast and much better control. It's certainly not the most technologically advanced game on the planet, but it's got atmosphere, pretty good fights, interesting ways of dispatching baddies, and a great story.

Considering how fast some of the enemies can get, I'm not sure exactly why you would absolutely need to "walk" in the game, unless you're trying to sneak up on someone (and the game didn't clarify whether walking was actually more quiet than running...certain tonics would only quieten footsteps in general).

While I don't think it's a 10/10 game, it's definitely a 9/10 in my book. Very nicely done, and one of the few shooters I've actually *wanted* to finish.

Actually my very first post did say ,
The problem with Bioshock I found is not enough to give it a 10/10 rating ,reviewers must be on crack don't know how any reviewer can give it a score that high, old classics like System Shock 2 were way better, the trouble I had with activation and sound problems(I was not alone)not to meantion a short game etc..its not a terrible game but far from perfect.

A game that is well overrated IMHO,I have lost all faith in online reviews. You'll always get people and reviewers trying to make the game sound better then what it is,I have to call Bioshock as I played it from start to finish.

Anyway I have said more then enough about this game, time for me to move on to greener pastures.

Completely incorrect in my book, unless you loaded Oblivion with so many mods that it wasn't even Oblivion anymore...

I had to install a 500mb (IIRC) mod just to be able to enjoy the game, however it still wasn't great with that mod. Even heavier reliance on user-generated content is needed to make TES:IV great...

I though Bioshock was quite engaging and interesting but not as good as the internet reviews rated it. I'd give it 8.5/10.

I felt Stalker was better.

This game just can't hold my interest. I tried playing it again last night and got bored after about 20mins. I just finished the photo quest. How much is left? I want to beat it, but only because I feel like I have to since I paid for it.. I can't quite place my finger on why it bores me, maybe I just don't like the combat, or maybe it's the story. I'm saving some dudes wife and kids, yay?

STALKER I could not put down though, heh.

BioShock will inevitably draw comparisons to other FPS and RPG hybrids.

When Half Life, System Shock 2, Thief and Deus Ex came out, those games offered variations to the basic premise of the Doom FPS gaming experience...those games each took the basic gameplay elements of a FPS and introduced something that initial Doom clones lacked...a compelling or engaging storyline, an interesting world to explore, and alternatives to run and gun gameplay.

Sure, each of those games had their flaws, but given the technology at the time, they were all outstanding games. It is difficult to replicate the experience of enjoying those game playing environments for the first time, because at the time it was something new and fresh.

Look at Half Life 2...essentially an updated version of Half Life...all of the gameplay elements that made Half Life a classic were present in Half Life 2, but with a shiny new interface and other interesting gameplay elements. I didn't find HL2 as enjoyable as the original, but that didn't make HL2 any less of a great game...and the story of Half Life is what drove me forward long after I got bored with the gameplay, because I want to know what happens to Gordon Freeman and how is story will play out.

Is BioShock a revolutionary step forward in FPS gameplay...perhaps not...but it is definitely evolutionary in that it incorporates some of the best gameplay elements of a FPS, and packages them into a very interesting environment.

Arguably, what makes BioShock great is not the gameplay but rather the city of Rapture itself...I never bothered with FEAR because the premise of the game didn't interest me...yet another run and gun FPS through an urban environment, but with a supernatural twist.

Rapture, and all of the sick and twisted things you encounter along the way, is what makes BioShock unique...when I kill a Splicer or Big Daddy, I actually stop to examine the corpse because of the amazing art design that went into those characters...I have never done that in a FPS before...when I encounter a new area in BioShock, and clear the area of threats, I like to walk around and just examine all the attention to detail in the level design...never bothered to do that with another FPS either.

What I also like about BioShock is that the progression is slow...there isn't a sense of urgency to rush through one level to the next...I sometimes go back to previously visited areas just to test different plasmid combos on the weaker and earlier Splicers.

Is BioShock the greatest FPS of all time...of course not...but it should make the top ten IMO...but here are my favorites of all time:

Doom (only because it started it all)
Half Life/Half Life 2
Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series
System Shock 2
Deus Ex
Thief series
BioShock
FarCry
Tron 2.0
Quake 2
Call of Duty
No One Lives Forever
Clive Barker's Undying

Dude was balls on.
It really is a pretty, dumb version of System Shock 2.

Shame. Aside from graphics it seems game designers really have no imagination these days.

EDIT:
I just rented the 360 version from Blockbuster. If the gameplay on the first two levels is any indication, I darn sure wont be paying 50 bucks to infect my PC with spyware.
Can only hope Crysis delivers. Everything else is sucking right now.

I've been wanting to buy this game and read things like this. I played the demo and think it's decent.
If it's so crappy as most people say it is, why can't I buy it for under $45.00 shipped yet? (NEW/RETAIL/ZERO installs)

I dunno if you've been watching closely, but so far as movies, music and games are concerned: Crappiness has nothing to do with how popular it is.

Most movies suck these days but they still put butts in theaters and sell millions of DVD's.
TV is the same only the butts are already there and sponsors pay a crapload of money for one commercial block on primetime television.
Music isnt quite as bad but still pretty expensive for the number of songs you may actually like on an album.
Video games are the worst. We havent seen much in innovative titles lately, and some just arent fun even as a repeat of other games.
I blame the sucess of the console which has led to dumbed-down, pretty games taking over the industry. Those games sell very well. Game companies dont give a damn about their product, they just want to make money. Why do you think we see a dozen new shooters a year? They sell. Why do we buy so many shooters? Thats mostly what we have.
Nasty little circle that keeps getting worse.

Bioshock has been hyped like mad, because companies learned a long time ago that advertisement is the best way to sell a product, NOT making it good quality at a reasonable price.
Bioshock is going to sell a ton of copies. Since we are so used to pretty games with limited content, many of us will like it and buy the next piece of crap that comes out.
/RANT

You cant find a cheap copy because it is selling, regardless of the suck factor. Why the heck would any business want to cut their profits?

I enjoyed it but have no desire to play it again.

So much of it felt derivative to me: Level design = HL1; Dystopia = HL2; Voice Recorders w/plot elements = Doom3; Creepy little girls = FEAR (or American McGhee's Alice depending on how old-school you are). Lots of others. Never played SS, but I guess the Gene-splicing stuff comes from there?

The first few levels are far superior to the rest of the game. Heck, the first 15 minutes are far superior to the rest of the game. Fort frolic is the best level, all said.

And why Art Deco in 1960? That's only about 40 years too late. That'd be like setting something in 1985, and the environment was full of WWII-era stuff.

The visuals and the sound were awesome. Combat was O.K. but not entirely satisfying.

I'd give it a 9. But the 100% reviews are just hype.

I didn't think it was a hyped game at all. I didn't know about it until 2 weeks before it was released. Unlike STALKER, HL2, and D3 that we knew about for years in advance.

I had my doubts about it, but it hooked me. I played it over at least 4 times all ready.

Do you want guns blazing and only guns blazing? The airboat and buggy driving were actually fun moments in Half Life 2, they gave added depth.
And Bioshock is not strictly an FPS, but has strong elements of an adventure title with RPG elements.

He's not alone. I've played nearly all FPS out there, starting with Wolfenstein era and going forward. This game is absolute trash. Horrible control, waay too dark (same with quake4 and doom3), and its just plain ugly and not fun. I want rocket launchers, double barrel shotguns, cool laser pistols, etc. Instead, i get a crappy machine gun, a pistol, and a wrench? WTF.

I played it for an hour and just cant get into it. Waste of money...

I'm in the medical station. Stopped playing it about a week or 2 ago and haven't gone back to it cos MOH:Airborne and Quake Wars are more appealing right now. TF2 beta starts tomorrow so Bioshock is at the back of the queue.
