For all you people that liked Bioshock have you played played System Shock 2?
Yeah, and it sucked ass.
-You don't start with a gun.
-You can't even use a gun until you learn how (I guess the military of the future lets any retard in).
-Every fight includes running up to an enemy, wait for them to swing, step back, approach again and hit them with a wrench. I know most shooters are like that, but at least in Quake you were doing this at a distance and using guns.
-The game has an absolute lack of scariness because the graphics and sound are horrible; Doom came out several years earlier, and I still jump when I hear the unique sound of an archvile.
-The game is so convoluted that you
need the tutorial at the start of the game.
-When you actually do find a gun, it breaks after a few shots.
-Enemies respawn but ammunition does not.
Worst of all is that most reviewers of the game sound like they were bribed into giving it a good review.
IGN, for example, has over a full page of story explanation and tries to make it sound exciting even though it's the same boring ass story as Bioshock. Oooh I listen to spooky tapes, this is so spooky. Then stuff like "these vile creatures are smart enough to use complex weaponry, respond to security alarms, and to, after a fashion, speak". You mean they shoot guns (every game), spawn when you trip an alarm (every game), and use scripted talking (Half-Life)? Jesus, this game is so revolutionary that it uses the same ideas as every other game at that time.
The review on
Gamespot is equally stupid. It goes on and on about all this great stuff then ends with:
"Finally,
despite System Shock 2's novel setting and its RPG elements, its gameplay doesn't really evolve significantly beyond that offered by recent first-person shooters. You'll spend much of your time strafing at enemies around corners, opening crates, and even hunting for keys. But the realistic environments, intriguing plot, and consistently uneasy atmosphere make System Shock 2 constantly effective. It is a hybrid game that effectively blends elements from a variety of genres into a thoroughly enjoyable and accessible package."
Exactly what I just stated. It's the same as every other game at the time except the combat is needlessly complicated, the graphics are horrible, and the main antagonist of the game is boredom.
While every critic shits their pants over System Shock 2, the game was not a commercial success.
Caltrops has an excellent article about why this game failed to meet expectations.
