Bittorrent Download Program: ABC

I used to use the ABC programme to download Bittorrent files along with a few open ports as it seemed to download faster. However, my computer has crashed twice since using this, the first time resulted in a scratch on my hard drive and a total loss of the data, the second time resulted in almost the same thing. I have since stopped using this but now using only the normal Bittorrent my downloads are nowhere near as fast. Does anyone know of a good alternative? I have heard of Azureus and DC++ but are there any problems with these? Also does anyone know of a guide on how to use DC++?

I've used Azueus, no problems. But I'm not a heavy user, so YMMV.

Something is definitely wrong with your computer/configuration.

I doubt ABC is the cause of the data loss.

I've tried it a few times, never any problem. I am not using BT because it takes fvcking forever to get anything. <5kB/s.

You forwarding ports 6881+?

OP - try Azureus. Only problem is it can use quite a bit of ram, 100-200mb.

Does anyone else find that Azareus slows down your internet connection to a crawl even if it isn't using much bandwidth itself?

For example, websurfing on my DSL gets very slow with Azareus running, even though Azareus is only U/L and D/L a few KB per second.

Not I... You sure you're not u/l'ing at your limit? That can choke the overhead needed for downloads, solution is to limit your u/l to slightly under max (or lower if so desired) in Azureus.

Btw, do you regularly scan for viruses and spyware, and do you have a firewall?

I've never had any problems with CPU/memory hogging, and the only time my bandwidth dies is if I slap seven torrents into seed and don't set a limit.

I have seen the CPU usage at 100% after starting Azureus and stay at 100% after closing the program. The CPU usage is being hogged up by java. As soon as java is shut down, CPU usage returns to normal. This happens with the newest version of java and if you use the older version, that is recommeded at the Azureus web site, you have no problems.

What I like best about Azureus is the use of plug-ins.

Not I... You sure you're not u/l'ing at your limit? That can choke the overhead needed for downloads, solution is to limit your u/l to slightly under max (or lower if so desired) in Azureus.

1. I just checked my ISP (SBC DSL) and I have (up to) 128 kbps upload and 1.5 Mbps download. I'll have to check my upload speed, I hadn't even thought that this could be my problem. Hmm...I hadn't realized my upload was so crappy.

2. ZoneAlarm (free), Spybot, AdAware, AVG Anti-virus updated and scanned regularly. Also a Netgear router/firewall, with ports 6881 to 6999 forwarded.

3. The latest java linked on Azareus's website is installed.

4. CPU usage is usually less than 20%, PF usages is 436 MB right now.

ABC seemed to crash my computer after running it for more than a day, i dont think it can be the settings as it was set up the same as my friends and the normal bittorrent runs fine just not at the same high speed for large files.

I'm using Azureus with Java JRE 1.4.2._05 and CPU is at 100% all the time. Internet connection slowed down dramatically. But then again, I have 6 files going with unlimited seeds.

hmm, just upgraded to JRE 1.5 and its always at 80% now. But its now JRE or Azureus doing it, but peer guardian.

Do you people run peer guardian while downloading torrents?

Azureus &amp; java 1.5.0 - works like a charm with CPU at 5-8%.
And I'm online 24/7 with 3-6 torrents opened.
You should really check your system (spyware!!!)
Format C: is a good solution once in a while

Azureus kills the internet connection to some extent for just about everyone I know. It seems like its doing a lot; finding and initiating tons of connections and getting many specific parts of files, so it doesn't surprise me the net goes to hell with Azureus downloading.

Yes I run PeerGuardian. And yes Azureus/Java takes a lot of RAM and CPU, but I don't use it all that much so it doesn't really matter.

Azureus rules all, as you will hear from the majority of people.

DC++ is a great client also...but it has absolutely nothing to do with torrents

Someone needs to try port-forwarding...that or if you don't have a router, maybe you are just trying to get files no one is seeding.

I use abc, its solid for me. I don't like azureus cause of the java interface crap...
