50 cents! :| Unfortunately at these prices Im going to have to stop supporting local business and buy over the internet. Stupid legislators cant balance a budget so they make the smokers pick up the tab. :disgust:

I can remeber when I was a kid (early '70's) my Dad sending me to the corner store on my bike to buy him smokes. Three packs of Winstons for a dollar.

Me, too. People smoking in public drives me crazy. I can't stand the smell of smoke. And people just blow it wherever they please, in your face, whatever. They don't give a sh!t.

Anti-smoking bans continue to gain traction. There are a lot of cities who now ban smoking in restaurants or require closed-off areas with separate ventilation for smokers. The public wants it and smokers are slowing accepting the fact the only permissible place to do their thing is in private.

The libertarian half of me is rather disgusted but side that enjoys smoke-free air isn't.

A) Smoking is terrible, and will kill you and everyone near you.

B) Fsck you! - I can smoke as much as I want and it's none of your business.

this isnt about smoking in public, its about idiotic politicians who are unable to balance a budget using smokers as a pawn in the chess game of politics. :|

At least they came out and said that it was just for the money this time, rather than hide behind pretenses that they care or something.

I feel no remorse/pity for you......maybe you will realize that smoking is stupid and you will quit because of the price....but probably not because you should have quit for other reasons.....
People who smoke in public places suck:|

Yep, it's slash-and-burn taxation. Once this tax cow is milked they'll move on to the next one.

SWirth86, the right tool for the right job, dude. Sin taxes, as someone else said here earlier (probably AmusedOne), should not be used as social engineering tools.

The U.S. economy is in such poor shape that I wouldn't expect any state to be able to successfully balance its budget.

Oregon's state budget is short almost 1 Billion dollars, they're proposing a 75 cents per pack increase here.

That's gonna piss off a lot of smokers.

I don't smoke, so I am not directly affected by this. It's the hypocracy that gets to me. The government issues their propaganda telling us how evil and naughty smoking is, yet it will be okay as long as you pay them a portion of the purchase price of each pack? Does anyone have any figures on how much the government pays the tobacco farmers each year? That should be good.

Yea, i guess youre right....I dont really have a problem w/ people smoking, but if some1 smokes in a public place, or when I'm around I get really pissed. I'm an athlete, and its really bad for my lungs, and i hate the smell of smoke. I do think that some younger kids are discouraged to start smoking by the higher price. Still, price shouldnt have anything to do about whether a person smokes or not.....theres other much more important reasons to not smoke(health).

I've never heard of that form of government.

Thanks for the heads up, I guess. I'm not going to change it, because I'm a lazy bastard, and you knew what I meant anyway.

Well, I disagree: I think that sin taxes are a great way to get people to re-evaluate their priorities. However, since they are trying to balance the budget there is a problem here:
A) More people stop smoking, or smoke less: budget is unbalanced again.
B) People mail-order cigs from other states.

Either way, I disagree with this new tax and I am about as anti-smoking as you can get. If I don't see you smoke I don't know you're a smoker; the my life, my body argument doesn't apply when you do it in my face. Would you want someone infected with smallpox sharing a room with you, using the argument "hey, my life my body"?

Where's the taxation on political donations? Yeah, that's right. I know who wears the daddy pants here.

I think that sucks.

I dont smoke anymore and dont have a problem with people smoking. The choice is yours and it should stay that way.

Also I hate all these freak cig police people that cry about everything, lets blame the smokers for everything including Global Warming.

I think that sin taxes are a great way to get people to re-evaluate their priorities

You my friend are a communist pinko wacko, the gov is not the body that should be telling anyone to re-evalute their priorities.

People have died for my freedom of choice!
