People have died for my freedom of choice!

LOL that can be taken 2 ways.

Yes brave soldiers have fought and died for your freedom of choice
Yes people have died by second hand smoke from your (not you personally) freedom of choice

Please.... do you drive/ride in a car or any other vehicle that uses a petroleum-fueled internal combustion engine?
I thought so.
Do you have any idea how much more toxic than cigarette smoke auto exhaust is? And how one car spews more in a minute than a 1000 smokers could in a whole day?
I thought not.
Don't give me that 2nd hand BS... :|

While this may be true, it doesen't mean that it shouldn't be prevented..

It's kinda like the people that go around smoking that rationalize it by saying, "Well.. I'm going to die anyway."

And yeah, Oregon's budget shortfall really sucks. It's stupid that we basically count our chickens before they hatch. We plan where all this money is going to go.. then.. whoops, we don't have that much.. lol
Well, by your logic then, driving a car should also be prevented. Or at least tack on a an additional hefty gasoline tax for no related reason.

Nicotine... Tar... Etc.

Don't repeat the bullsh!t the tobacco industry shoved up your ass, nor all the 'unbiased' research they pay institutes to do. If you pay me well enough I'll prove that Bush is actually not dumb.

Nitrous Oxide... hydrocarbons... soot... etc.

Don't repeat the bullsh!t the auto industry shoved up your ass...

Funny how you must assume I'm a smoker or that I got my information from the tobacco industry. First, I don't smoke. Bad legislation is bad legislation, I will oppose it regardless of the propaganda. Second, in 1970, Ralph Nader testified before the Senate that, within 25 years, 50,000 Americans would die every year from lung cancer caused by auto pollution. His proof and his figures were rock solid. In 1995, the AMA and the ACS announced that 50,000 Americans died every year from lung cancer caused by 2nd-hand smoke. To this day, they have no proof.

Here are the real facts: alcohol prohibition didn't work, drug prohibition doesn't work, and tobacco prohibition won't work. It never ceases to amaze me how many self-righteous Americans need to pull their heads out of their asses.

Can somebody please find one article that shows that secondhand smoke was directly the cause of a person's death. JUST ONE ARTICLE FROM A TRUSTED UNBIASED SOURCE!

All news sources are biased. You won't find an article about someone dying from second hand smoke. Second hand smoke smells horrible, screws up your lungs, and it pisses me off. I'm not really concerned about the health issues w/ second hand smoke, its just that it irks me greatly.

OK look. Maybe second hand smoke doesn't kill people. I don't know for sure. Really what pisses me off is when I'm walking down the street or walk out of a smoke free building... I'm blasted with a huge cloud of nasty smoke. Fine smoke all you want... but I don't want to FREAKIN have it in my Lungs! You say its more toxic than auto exhaust is... well.... I don't stick my head next to the axhaust and breath it in... I try to avoid it. THATS what pisses me off.

(maybe your one of those ppl who trys to avoid blowing smoke in people's faces and I thank you for that, I'm talking about the general smokers then)

This is just plain rediculous.

I am not a smoker, but here is my rant on raising cigarette taxes to be the "fix" for all the states, local governments, etc.

Why is raising cigarette taxes the ONLY thing congress people think of when the income isn't high enough? Raising cigarette taxes is only going to drive down income from cigarettes because people are going to be from out of state, drive out of state, etc. Also, some people quit when the cigarette habits becomes too expensive! Where is the tax money going to come from now?

The MAJOR complaint is: TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION. Why are you taxing a certain segment of people just because the states congress people cannot budget with what they have? If the state's buget cannot be balanced, it effects EVERYONE in that state -- not JUST the smokers. If revenue is hurting that bad, raise taxes on everything, not just the smokers. You can eaisly get much more income raising sales taxes a quarter percent versus raising cigarette prices some arbitrary value.

Don't get me wrong, I don't approve of smoking, but taxing specific people, for the shortcomes of the state, isn't the appropriate thing to do.

The ONLY time to raise prices on cigarettes (ihmo) is when smokers are causing too much of a burdon on the health care system of the state. Raising the cigarette taxes to support the dying, sickly, smokers is the only way to really put the tax dollars from cigarettes to "good" use.

Either you are so bigoted in your opinion that your eyes are blinded or your reading comprehension skills are truly amazing.

Please re-read my post above.

As for the rest of your opinion, it sounds to me like you support a system of unfair taxation (and government reliance on income from the sales of a product it claims to wish to suppress) out of spite.

I don't have a problem with people who want to smoke, or are too weak to quit even if they want to.

However, ANYTHING that furthers my chances of being able to go out and eat somewhere or do anything in public for that matter and NOT have to smell that sh!t thrills me to death!

It's great that you can't smoke inside most public places, but I am so sick of having to wade through a dense cloud of smoke underneath every overhang to the entrance/exit of a building. I have to hold my breath when walking in and out.

But if I were to walk up next to a smoker outside and let one rip right next to them, I would probably get into a fight for disrespecting that person. It would be justifiable for them to be upset with me as well. Why then, do the same laws of logic not apply to their nasty-ass habit??

Oh well. The average pack of cigarettes costs the health system far more than the taxes they bring in anyway.
