Is it or is it now OK to use Blockquote to achieve indented text?

I CANNOT USE STYLE SHEETS, and I don't know how else to achieve this effect, aside from like 15 nonbreaking spaces...

So can I use <blockquote> or not????

Oh, and if its not OK, WHY NOT???

Just use nested tables. Create one table, and then in the first row, first column, make another table about 30 pixels smaller than the first and make sure it is centered. Websites can probably explain it better but definitely do tables.

dude ...

<blockquote> indents stuff ..

You could get away with <div> or <ul> also ...

the best way probably would be to make a table ...

<table width="80%" border="0" align="center"><tr><td>
Stuff
</td></tr></table>

But it's all up to you man ...

You should definitely AVOID nesting tables really deep. Besides the fact that Netscape takes forever to try and display a page with deeply nested tables, errors can also appear. The best way to achieve spacing is to create a 1-pixel transparent gif. Then you can use that image and specify the EXACT pixel length you want like:

<IMG SRC="fill.gif" WIDTH="10" HEIGHT="1">Text that appears 10 pixels from left side

Note: I'm not saying that you should never nest tables, but you should avoid doing it (like in above situation) when possible.

Ok Ok, I understand all that, but still:

WHY shouldn't I use <blockquote>???

I have yet to see any problems with it using Netscape, IE and Opera, so what's so bad about using it???

Why wouldn't you use it, if all you want to so is simply indent text? It's a valid, current, HTML tag. Who says you shouldn't use it?

When using BLOCKQUOTE just remember that you are indenting on both the left AND right side of your content. If you only wish the left side of your content to be indented, blockquote is not the tag to use.

I think the <dir> </dir> tag does indenting on just one side.

The reason you shouldn't use <blockquote> (and it's only a theoretical reason) is that's not what <blockquote> is for. <blockquote> is for (gasp!) QUOTATIONS!!! HTML is supposed to be used for structural markup, describing what the text is, not how it looks. CSS is used to control the visual appearance of the document. That being said, most webpages on the net today don't follow these rules. So go ahead and use <blockquote>. The HTML police won't come and arrest you for it!

P.S. If you want to learn to use HTML and CSS correctly, check out the W3C website

<< CSS is used to control the visual appearance of the document. >>

The original poster said, in all capital letters, that they could not use CSS, for whatever reason. But in general you are right.

Exactly.

And why can't you use CSS? Standards-compliance is a good thing (tm).
