I would be surprised if it was not know before the PS3 release. The internet is full of crafty people, just like the Amish.

Blu-ray supports what HD-DVD supports video codec wise. From the Blu-ray spec:

1.8 What video codecs will Blu-ray support?

MPEG-2 - enhanced for HD, also used for playback of DVDs and HDTV recordings.
MPEG-4 AVC - part of the MPEG-4 standard also known as H.264 (High Profile and Main Profile).
SMPTE VC-1 - standard based on Microsoft's Windows Media Video (WMV) technology.

Please note that this simply means that all Blu-ray players and recorders will have to support playback of these video codecs, it will still be up to the movie studios to decide which video codec(s) they use for their releases.

And MPEG2 at high data rates is actually fairly impressive, but at the cost of file size. It made sense to use MPEG2 at first because it was a tried and true codec, and there was lots of industry experience with it. AVC and VC1 are definitely the way going forward. I think a lot of this will be moot anyways, as downloading video in AVC and VC1 seems like the way of the future. It also bypasses the HD-DVD vs Blu-ray debate.

Of course the PS3 is made of unobtanium and blanks are $$$.

Holy crap, nice. Now we just need to find a way to do this with HD-DVD movies.

Edit: I just saw it could be done with HD-DVDs too. Nice.

I saw blanks for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD at Fry's a month ago. They were $20 each. IIRC, that was the same price as the first DVD DL media. Early adoption requires large pockets.

I'm pretty sure HDDVD is a little cheaper and I'm actually considering one myself later on. They're pretty much the same with quality and such, I think it will boil down to whoever has more movies later on.

What would be the average size of a ripped movie at 1:1? HDD space is cheap.

Haha I would not want to carry any optical disc in my pocket either.

100TB SAN loaded with full rips = 1080p video on demand heaven.

Will daemon tools let you mount it and play it through Power DVD?

I'd like to know this - unfortunately I'm on the quite archaic power DVD 5.0.

(6.0 was horribly slow loading volumes from 1Gbps network shares!)

PowerDVD 6 also takes over all of your file associations without asking. After that, I switched back to 5... 'cause I'm too lazy to change them all back.

That's why I keep a stack of them paper cd holder thingy-ma-bobs .

I just throw files to my media/file server and play em on my HDTV, too lazy to share my drives via networking. Although having 100TB does sound surprisingly delicious I only have 1.5 in my main machine (upgrading to 3.0 soon) and 1.5 in my other one.

Speaking of TB storage, when the heck are the 1TB hard drives coming out? I need a few of those.

I am with ya! I would love to get rid of my 6 HDs and just get 4 1TB drives.

Another good recent article on the subject. It may be one-sided, but it makes some good points - HD Battle May Be Over

And don't discount how critical the porn industry has been for the success of new media. It's no secret that porn played a large part in the adoption of VHS and the internet. Which is all the more baffling that Sony would take this position. But more than any company I've ever seen, Sony seems to have a gun barrel glued to it's shoe, so I guess it shouldn't be suprising at all.

If the Adult industry backs it, the fight is over. It's happened before and it will happen again, Adult entertainment determines our entertainment medium!

I would have to vote for HD as well, both are good formats, but the Blu-Ray has had a sloppy and poor intro, and Sony does not have a good track record on this. Either way, I will give it 6mo before I get an HD player!

VHS is virtually unknown in Japan...they all have Beta-Max players. The U.S. usually votes with their pocketbook, which is why VHS beat a vastly superior format on the east side of the Pacific.

Does that mean Blu-Ray is superior? I dunno...maybe, maybe not. But it's a lot like console game systems: they live and die by content. If the porn industry backs a particular format, and most movie studios also support the same format, that should play a pivotal role on which will win in the U.S. regardless of price. But we all know they will eventually follow the installed user base, so it comes right back to price again.

OK, now I'm getting a headache. Thanks a lot..

Seriously? So.. VHS never really won then. It just won a segment of the market. I thought it was completely wiped out in all countries and everyone used VHS.

Blu-Ray is off to a good start being a part of every PS3. I am working to get a 1080p HDTV so I can start buying BR DVD's.

It is HD-DVD. But there have been Blu-Ray productions too. A director I know online was shipped a Blu-Ray copy (unsolicated).

I dont think there are realy any good Hd-DVD players out yet, The technolgy is still new and being devloped a lot. As far as who will become the standard still to early to tell.
The whole High Defintion Market is still very new and evolving. The Standard 1080p is seen only on a few TV's but with more scheduel from what they showed at the CES. The suposed standard of HDMI 1.3 is again hard to find on any of the equipment, can think of the PS3 and the new Denon recivers that that have that conection right now.

I neither cabel or satalite offers true 1080p yet though they are working on it suposedly, They dont have the bandwith to transmit it right. IE you will see artifacts in your picture sometimes as pan across a stadium during a football game.

I curently 50" Sony rear projection LCD I bught last year when my 28 year old 27" curtis mathis died, also have a xbox 360 with the Hd-dvd add on hooked up. The Hd-DvD add on was less like $176 when I bught it with a coupon from circit city. I like the HD-DVD player a lot it dose a good job of playing both HD-DVD and DVD disc, But like I said it is and all are still new tech and the prices of this Players for both formats will drop greatly with in 2 years I would think.

I personly think we will see that duel format HD players become the Norm in the short term, I no LG has already introduced a duel format one.

There is still some new tech coming like SED that makes current LCD and Plamsa bad in comparison
