I would be surprised if it was not know before the PS3 release. The internet is full of crafty people, just like the Amish.

Sony is shooting themselves in the foot with BluRay using only mpeg2. It negates any capacity advantage bluray might have. Who is going to buy bluray if the picture is worse than hddvd?
1.8 What video codecs will Blu-ray support?
MPEG-2 - enhanced for HD, also used for playback of DVDs and HDTV recordings.
MPEG-4 AVC - part of the MPEG-4 standard also known as H.264 (High Profile and Main Profile).
SMPTE VC-1 - standard based on Microsoft's Windows Media Video (WMV) technology.
Please note that this simply means that all Blu-ray players and recorders will have to support playback of these video codecs, it will still be up to the movie studios to decide which video codec(s) they use for their releases.

Of course the PS3 is made of unobtanium and blanks are $$$.
I saw blanks for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD at Fry's a month ago. They were $20 each. IIRC, that was the same price as the first DVD DL media. Early adoption requires large pockets.Originally posted by: MS Dawn

What would be the average size of a ripped movie at 1:1? HDD space is cheap.

Will daemon tools let you mount it and play it through Power DVD?Originally posted by: MS Dawn

Haha I would not want to carry any optical disc in my pocket either.
100TB SAN loaded with full rips = 1080p video on demand heaven.

I'd like to know this - unfortunately I'm on the quite archaic power DVD 5.0.
(6.0 was horribly slow loading volumes from 1Gbps network shares!)

Speaking of TB storage, when the heck are the 1TB hard drives coming out? I need a few of those.

this is like beta-max vs VCR
VHS is virtually unknown in Japan...they all have Beta-Max players. The U.S. usually votes with their pocketbook, which is why VHS beat a vastly superior format on the east side of the Pacific.
Does that mean Blu-Ray is superior? I dunno...maybe, maybe not. But it's a lot like console game systems: they live and die by content. If the porn industry backs a particular format, and most movie studios also support the same format, that should play a pivotal role on which will win in the U.S. regardless of price. But we all know they will eventually follow the installed user base, so it comes right back to price again.
OK, now I'm getting a headache. Thanks a lot..

I'm waiting for the pr0n industry to take a side. They're always a good indicator that a media format has been generally accepted as "mainstream."

It is HD-DVD. But there have been Blu-Ray productions too. A director I know online was shipped a Blu-Ray copy (unsolicated).Originally posted by: Soviet
