Does that mean Blu-Ray is superior? I dunno...maybe, maybe not. But it's a lot like console game systems: they live and die by content. If the porn industry backs a particular format, and most movie studios also support the same format, that should play a pivotal role on which will win in the U.S. regardless of price. But we all know they will eventually follow the installed user base, so it comes right back to price again.

Seriously? So.. VHS never really won then. It just won a segment of the market. I thought it was completely wiped out in all countries and everyone used VHS.

More precisely, VHS didn't win segments...it won entire markets. The U.S. is one of those markets. BetaMax won other markets, such as Japan. Understand that when we're talking markets, we're primarily talking about consumers.

With that said, note that you can go to almost any newsroom in the U.S. today and find a stack of BetaMax players. There will be a couple of VHS players for viewer-submitted tapes, but otherwise recordings on VHS are too inferior for transmission to SDTV or archiving, so the road cameras are all BetaMax. Other organizations use BetaMax as well: I toured the Seahawks' Kirkland facility last year, and their media room was filled with them...not a single VHS in sight. They have their system set up to burn DVDs for coaches for off-site review, etc, but otherwise can playback to almost any TV in the facility right from their media room. Pretty cool setup.

In fact, I was just reading elsewhere that LG has a combo player. Not sure if it's a PC or standalone player though.

Heard that as well. Unless it comes in at the below $500 range (unlikely), I'll be getting the 360 HD-DVD player.
