How'd this thread get bumped back up?

Neither format is going to win. We'll have two more years of a long, pointless deadlock before cost effective dual format players finally hit, and after that, there will be no reason for either side to quit, and all will just have to buy the dual format player - to support the corporate competitiveness that always benefits consumers, for we can't let Communism win.

Bumped up from the dark grave for ATOTers to ponder the fate of! I voted HD-DVD!

Now get off your bums and vote too!

It's time to bury this dead ray! It's turned blue and smells funny around here rotting this long! I think it's the same dead blue ray that killed that nature guy!

With the recent aggressive pricing of HD-DVD players my vote goes to HD-DVD. F Sony!

Since Toshiba sold a bazillion HD DVD players in the last week or so I don't think the format is going anywhere. I picked up a Xbox 360 add on player and got a HD-A2 at WalMart for $99. So until the Blu-Ray camp has some reasonably priced players I'll be buying and enjoying HD DVD movies.

why are people so excited about the recent deal for the HD-DVD player, i thought the true potential of HD-DVD was 1080p, the el cheapo hd dvd players don't support 1080p, the ones that do support it don't cost a whole lot less than blue ray players

Once again. Basically, if you have a 1080p set, the set is going to display as 1080p even though the player is listed at 1080i.

This has been covered multiple times at AVS and has been covered both here and at Slickdeals.

BTW, this is a post I made earlier in a similar thread now long buried in Hot Topics:

<snip>
Here's the lowdown. Microsoft is backing HD. What does that tell you in terms of future market saturation? The fact that the newest Xboxes are going to have HD-DVD built in, will be the giant iceberg that the Titanic BR camp is fearing, and it is already happening. Look at the way they are dumping the stand alone HD players for Xboxes as we speak. And in fact, these were the first to be dumped on the market. And Toshiba has also signed on more movie companies recently, and is poised to reclaim this market. Sony is only appearing to dump more movies out now, because if they already own it, it is virtually the same price for them to dump BR as it is SD-DVD at this time.

And concerning the Xbox versus the PS3 controllers, is there really any debate over what controller is superior? the PS3 controller is for people with small hands, like kids who are 12 and under, or Asians. Most adults and teenagers in the US can more easily handle the larger Xbox controllers. And who has more money to spend in the US? The kids 12 and under, or their parents?

I personally know more adults who buy Xboxes to play games based on the controllers and game selections. I know entire fire departments who all buy Xboxes to play games at the station when they are waiting on fire calls. They are not buying PS3s. Or at least, they are not bragging about it, LOL.

And lets not forget this little tidbit: Toshiba invented the DVD format in the first place. You really think they are going to roll over and let Sony mount them now? I kind of doubt it. But you got to give Sony some credit for trying to. It is Sony forcing this "HD/BR WAR" on the consumers. Just like they fought the VHS/Betamax one. They are entirely responsible for it. All Sony is really interested in is the lucrative licensing fees from other movie companies since they already own so much of what they are trying to push in terms of movies. Which means they have to pay ZERO in extra licensing fees to themselves for BR. Toshiba, on the other hand, does not own any media themselves, at least as far as I know, and all movies they license earns them a royalty. That is the major difference between them in terms of strategy. And Toshiba is offering cheaper deals to movie companies to license their HD technology than Sony is, so who do you think will win this war in the end? It already appears obvious.

Sony depends on the clueless to keep their cash cow moving.

Clearly, they've found one.

Dumbass, your comment about "cheap" HD DVD players was really what I was referring to.

You clearly don't understand the 1080i/p game.

I bought an inexpensive HD DVD player and there's nothing cheap about it at all. Performs flawlessly in glorious HD.

with the way the recent fire sale went, and the numbers of HD DVD players sold in it, I fear Warner may end up choosing HD DVD exclusivity.
That will make it a battle between: Sony, MGM, Fox, Disney, and Lionsgate, vs Universal, Warner, and Paramount.
That sounds pretty long lasting to me. Maybe by time this settles down, we as consumers will be treated to a NEW format that will enter the fray and make us pay money. Yay to never having a single format as standard for a time on its own? Sounds like a fun future.

I'm on the HD-DVD wagon now thanks to the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive for $165 shipped with a handful of movies. I don't know exactly why I got it over the $99 player, but my wife hasn't seen Heroes Season 1 and it was one less thing to connect to the main system, so I figured what the heck. Now I just need a cheap PS3 for Blu-ray...

The only thing I care about is who can put HD on my screen for the least amount of money. Sorry but I'm still a poor college student.

No one mentioned support for Sony. They said you were clueless, which you most certainly are.

Bought a $165 XBOX 360 HD DVD player from Buy.com with Heroes and got my parents a $100 Toshiba HD-A2 from Wal-Mart. HD DVD FTW. Sony's never introduced a format that lasted, history points towards Blu-Ray failing.

So you don't use DVDs anymore?

That's an unfair comparison, as Sony was but one member of a consortium of about 9 other companies that joined to make a unified standard DVD. I believe OP was referring to a format that Sony introduced exclusively, ala UMD or the sort.

That is almost twice the capacity folks!! A lot more useful for computer storage.

Sarcasm meter broken...not sure where you stand although begs the question for people talking about storage issues...Are that many people actually going to go back to burning discs for backing up storage? Save your money on a BR player and buy a couple hard drives.

And as far as BR vs HD DVD... Is either one going to really offer me a better viewing experience for movies? If not a significant amount, HD-DVD since it's cheaper.

Actually Sony lost that as well. There were 2 disc types...

"In the early 1990s two high-density optical storage standards were being developed; one was the MultiMedia Compact Disc, backed by Philips and Sony, and the other was the Super Density disc, supported by Toshiba, Time Warner, Matsushita Electric, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, Pioneer, Thomson, and JVC. IBM's president, Lou Gerstner, acting as a matchmaker, led an effort to unite the two camps behind a single standard, anticipating a repeat of the costly videotape format war between VHS and Betamax in the 1980s.

Philips and Sony abandoned their MultiMedia Compact Disc and fully agreed upon Toshiba's SuperDensity Disc with only one modification, namely changing to EFMPlus modulation."
