"several BOINC client instances on a computer." is sometimes easier said than done, especially on windows and for those of us that are not as technically savy. and I have now converted most of my boxes to windows to use lasso, which I DO know how to use for pinning.

Feel free to hop on our Discord and I’ll help you with it.
It’s way easier than it sounds and takes less time than you'd think.

To get started with multiple client instances is actually easier on Windows, simply because more people use Windows. Some years back I got started myself with the Windows related part of the famous "mmonnin's Guide", even though I always was more familiar with Linux than with Windows.

I once wrote a "[How To] Multiple boinc clients on the same computer". Its first chapter "Quick guide for Windows installations"... is nothing more than a link to mmonnin's Guide. :-)

Correct. It is an explicitly supported feature of the BOINC client, after all. But it is a lower-level feature. One has to be interested in interacting with a few more controls of the BOINC client than normally. But if one is not interested in stuff like that, that's not a bad thing, as there are so many other things one can be interested in and learn in Distributed Computing, not to mention outside of DC.

Indeed, I have many clients on every PC. 1 CPU client and a GPU client at all times, plus more for bunkering. If a project has a task in progress limit where I can only get a days work but the bunker period is 5 fays? Just have 5 clients with a days queue each. Multiple clients started with taskset in linux can also keep tasks pinned.

Edit: I also go to that guide when I install linux. Ubuntu 24 has a different boinc location at /usr/local/bin/boinc but the concept works with that change.

Great job so far, everyone. We're off to a strong start 🥳
we lost one to LTT one to SG in the hourly fight the last update
I hope that trend does not continue.

Most Europeans who have bunkers don't unload them in the first hours of the contests. Start at 00:00 UTC is 2am local time here. They usually unload bunkers around now, when it's morning.

...Going by points, he has had 17 mill in the last 7 days, and I have run it pretty exclusively for that time (only half my boxes) and got 2 mil, same as he did today. Looking at his sat stats on sunday will really tell the tale. He is 27 overall WCG and I am 38.

So Sunday mid day will tell us if we need to worry. I am all in now, except the 2 boxes that can't get trusted, 2 of 128 and 7 of 128 !
Hello Markfw! I see you have been on the global WCG leaderboard nice 2 meet u.
Yeah so I'm danwat1234 in the LTT team. Your team is killing it! 6.8M points in the last hour sheesh. Going bonkers releasing the bunkers? The Pentathlong points are BOINC points, correct? Not WCG points, which I believe are 7x larger. who else besides Markfw is in the 1st page of the list? https://worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewStatsByMemberY.do?sort=points
My setup all runs Windows 10, undervolted as much as possible with ThrottleStop, across basically 18 120v circuits in my house. No cloud! No not over 500 Amps LOL. I acquired these thru mostly good deals from a popular auction site and have made a guide for others to do similar. playlist;
. and a mostly up to date tour video, a few stacks added since then;
. I have 200A service, house is pretty much maxed out except for dryer circuit. AMD Zen 6 may be ideal eventual upgrade. Probably should wait for used business SFFs with Zen 6 & because GPUs may be compute of choice for everything in the coming years, save for Folding's 0xa8 CPU work. Einstein's FGRP5 CPU work looks to be finishing up this year.
I fell into this competition when WCG just happened to be the Marathon segment.

I hope a lot of Ya'll can continue to crunch hard through the years not just during our friendly competition and increase popularity. DeSci! If World Community Grid can get it together, Mapping Arthritis Markers may become stable and eventual GPU compute support coming for both Mapping Cancer & Arthritis Markers. Could properly rival Folding eventually, perhaps, if it proves itself as a platform.
Cheers

This is what I use. Here it says #38 projectwide (from free-dc)And the stats come from 14 computers, but right now I can't get more than 20 or so tasks for the 128 thread machines. I do it all for about 40-50 amps of power

I think the pentathlon is gathering WCG points. Not the BOINC credits. As the other stats sites seem to line up with that theory. 7 WCG points = 1 BOINC point and nearly everyone is 7x the stats sites numbers.

Bless you, @craiggloyd , for providing housing, and food, for these perfectly capable, yet displaced, workers!

I understand you run 240v here and there, and then split that back into 120v at the outlet/power strip? If you found a way to (safely) leave that at 240v going into the PSU, you would gain 2-3% more efficiency, less heat, less energy use. Surely they are all new enough to be auto switching. But if any have that little red slider, I can see that being a real pain.

Problem: The project server refills the buffer of a small and slow computer at the same rate as it refills the buffer of a large and fast computer. For the small computer, this refill rate might be sufficient to match the computer's work completion rate, but for the large computer it might not be.
Solution¹: Divide the large computer into several small computers. (By means of several BOINC client instances on the computer.)

________
¹) It may not be a sustainable solution in the bigger picture though. If the server does not keep up with refill requests from m small + n large computers, it also is unlikely to keep up with requests from m + n•p small computers. If this is the case, either the server should be made faster, or client-side computing capacity will simply be left underutilized.

so you have the instructions for that ? I have 7 computers to do this to, so I hope it does not take too long (windows 10)

1 - Make C:\ProgramData\BOINC2 or whatever name you want to increment your folder structure
2 - Add <allow_multiple_clients>1</allow_multiple_clients> to cc_config in that folder plus anything else you want in there like <allow_remote_gui_rpc>1</allow_remote_gui_rpc>
3 - batch file. I use 31422 for 2nd client 31423 for 3rd etc.

"c:\Program Files\BOINC\boinc.exe" --allow_multiple_clients --redirectio --detach_console --gui_rpc_port 31422 --dir C:\ProgramData\BOINC2
exit

4 - Connect via BOINCTasks
5 - Increment the folder name and port #
