OK I just finished running through Lost Cave on my second playthrough. All I can say is holy shit. If I never saw another hardened alpha or badmutha shock skag I would be the happiest man on earth.

The game definitely gets difficult the further you go, which I like. I cant stand games where you just run through it in a few days.....

I cant even imagine how hard it must be the second time through.

The game is pretty badass though. Their multiplayer support needs some more effort, but other than that, the game is pretty close to halo in terms of cooperative fps fun.

If you think the first playthrough is hard, at any point, then you will struggle in the second part. I breezed through the first part, and found it to be too easy. The second playthrough was more challenging, but never frustrating.

That is one thing I'll give this game. I can die and not be frustrated. Most games when I die, I get mad and quit. Seriously.

Funny I experienced the exact opposite. It just got easier the further I got.

Well did you play it 4 person coop or solo? That makes a big difference. Im only playing 4 person coop, which makes it a lot harder. Id never play noobish single player. Its pretty easy single.

Also, this game is heavily about luck of finding weapons. 4 person coop, you are spliting everything with 4 people, if you dont get good weapons, which I dont very often, its a lot more difficult. I went like 4-5 hours one night without finding a single decent weapon to replace a current one.

I've gone 10-15 levels twice without getting a good new weapon while playing solo.

You know, my experience wasn't that it got easier or harder as time went on, but rather the difficulty was all over the map, and entirely unpredictable. You'll go through several sections, annihilating everything, steamrolling bosses....and then you'll hit a part where it's just flat out *hard*.

The lance, as noted, gave me trouble. Interestingly though, no part of the entire plot was as hard as mothrakk on the second playthrough.

You two are checking the shops, right?

I never find anything at the shops. Not even any good guns that I don't want/use.

Isn't that odd? I'm an experienced 15 year gamer who always gets frustrated when I'm stuck repeating a boss fight or the like. In the past I would ALWAYS give up even after just a few tries or maybe cheat my way through. With borderlands however I have no such feelings.
I've tried about ten times sofar to kill bonehead to no avail but I refuse to give up and I'm not the least bit frustrated. Merely challenged.

I believe that part of the secret here is that every time you face that boss again the circumstances are slightly different so it doesn't feel like the same fight.
Also just the freshness and uniqueness of the entire game certainly helps.

So I'm just not sure if I'll like this game. I don't want to buy it because I could see myself dumping it. Would you guys say it's closer to Stalker or Fallout 3 in gameplay? (Or something else I may be overlooking?) I just don't like too much RPG in my FPS. You got your chocolate in my peanut butter.....

The hardest thing I've had to do in this game is the last round of the Circle of Slaughter where the mega ass-kicker brutes come out along with a swarm of regular enemies. But Krom dropped an elemental sniper rifle that could 3 shot those guys so I just went back there after getting it and pwned the place. Then I pretty much one-shotted my way through the rest of the game with that.

It's nothing like those two games.

Borderlands looks like those games, but doesn't play like it. It generally controls just like any other FPS you've played, but it has some serious RPG elements to it. You level up and take quests, and if you try to kill a enemy that's significantly higher up on level, then well you're screwed.

There's four classes, each with their own unique abilities and skill and you choose which talents they have.

It's far from either of those titles you listed. Also I disagree with fatpat, it doesn't look like them at all either. Sure it has the post-apocalyptic feel but it doesn't "look" anything like them.

Well if you are stuck with an old gun and haven't been able to replace it, you could chest farm in New Haven. There are 5 weapon chests in that town, not counting the secret one.

It has just the right amount of RPG - not too little, not too much.

Here is a video review of the game:

A quick story about a 4 player coop game from last night. We are on our second playthrough, with really decent weapons from New Haven.

We had just finished getting all the booze for Crazy Earl and zoned. We take two steps and about 5-7 little Spiderants pop up, so we lay waste to them. Another 5-7 pop up, along with some slightly tougher variants, and just as the last few are about to go down, a fresh wave pops up with even tougher spiderants (Overlords, Queens, Kings, etc). The waves are coming faster and faster now, with tougher and tougher spiderants, until there are 2 badmutha versions running around, one lighting, one acid. The damage of just ONE of these things is INSANE. I'm playing Brick, my shields are at 751, and health at 1,600+ from skills and +health mods.

Just one ground slam attack from one of these badmutha's takes all my shields and my health down to 100'ish. The attack is one hitting my friends (a hunter, soldier, and siren) if they get caught in the blast. Luckily there are still quite a few of the weaker spiderants around, so we can get second winds. From start to finish, the fight lasted around 3 minutes, but it was non-stop chaos the entire time. This game freaking rocks.

I'd suggest that people do just the main quests on the second playthrough, ignoring all the secondary quests until after you've beaten the second playthrough. At that point all the baddies get reset to level 50+, and the side missions will become a challenge again.

So what's it like, then? Like WOW that's an FPS? Never played that either. Am I like trying to be a level 45 Orc or something? But at the same time - it's mostly a shooter.

It's unique. That's what makes it so refreshing.
It plays like a shooter with rpg elements. That's all.

It's like Rainbow Six Vegas... with 17 million guns.

Too long? if anything the game should be longer. And it is far from boring playing with multiple people unless you're all very very bad.
