Bought a new Laptop

I recently purchased a new laptop and I need to be able to transfer files quickly from my PC to the laptop and visa versa.

I'm hoping that I can just run a USB cable between them and transfer files that way but I don't have any experience with this. Also my PC only has USB 1.1 but the laptop is 2.0... not sure if that will cause problems.

USB cable is certainly a possibility. The USB 1.1 on the PC would downgrade the speed to USB 1.1 standard though. A faster alternative would be a LAN transfer, but that's ofcourse only if you HAVE a LAN.

Don;t need a lan, just both need ethernet ports, and a crossover cacle, and a little configuration (hard code the IP addresses, or enable netbui)

If both your PC and your new laptop have 100Mbps Ethernet, that would be probably be the fastest way to transfer the files. You'd just need to buy a crossover Ethernet cable.

Like the others said, you can use a crossover cable to hook both PC's together in a network, but Firewire is also an option, if i remember correctly, its a fair bit faster than ethernet too. I don't think you need anything special other than a 6 pin to 6 pin or 4 pin to 6 pin cable, depending on if your laptop has a 4 pin or 6 pin port. If both PC's don't have a firewire port then obviously a cross over cable is your best bet. I may be wrong but i don't think you can make a network through USB, somebody correct me if i am wrong. Hope this helps.

another vote for ethernet, USB 1.1 would take 682 seconds (11 minutes) per GB at maximum speed.
