I'm about to close on a new home (the cosmetic walkthrough in on Tues. and the closing is set for Wed.)! I'm sorry that I don't have any pics at the moment... all of my stuff has been packed up and shipped to TX. I am originally from DFW, but I'm currently on a TDY assignment in DC and have been for the last 2 years, thus my ability to afford a nice down payment.

Info on the house:

~180k
~2300 sq. feet
4 BR / 2 BA / 1 story
in Murphy, TX in the Maxwell Creek subdivision (which BTW is FIOS-ready!)
Link to the community

Anyway, the house looks great, but I'm a little nervous about the closing. I suppose that's how it always is when you're about to sign for a huge loan. Any tips? I'm about to leave for the day to head outta her and start the long freaking drive... ugh!

I promise I'll put up pics later!

Tell me about it! All of the houses in the DC area (where I am now) are so damn expensive. Even for the crappiest townhouse, you're looking at almost 400k. I'm so thankful that my company paid for my stay up here!

I went to look at some houses in Murphy. Some really nice houses in the new neighborhoods. Best part, your kids might get to go to Plano East!

What job do you have where you are on TDY?

I've definitely thought about moving to Texas. I've seen so many nicer communties such as that with CHEAP houses.

I personally only need a house half as big and half as much as that.

What are salaries like down there?

I work over at Raytheon and I am on TDY in DC. The only reason why I got a large-ish house like that is because I'm married and want to have kids some day.

Salaries in Dallas vary. I know some people who are making 6 figures down there, but I rake in around 70k myself.

Wow...nice price on that! How's the constuction? Are they doing things like building the windows into the drywall, using 3/8" drywall, etc? I learned a lot when I had my house built

Unfortunately I haven't learned that much about house building. My house was already built right before I got it, so my wife and I couldn't make too many choices about what to put into it. In order to save some $$$, we are gonna do some self-upgrades, so I'm sure I'll be forced to learn alot whether I want to or not!

Usually upgrades are added to the cost of the home and you'll be paying property taxes on them. Doing upgrades after are not part of your property taxes so there is an upside in that situation IMO. Congrats

Tips? If you're near Crawford, TX, don't drink the water. It made someone we all know very stupid.
