Hey guys,

Im having trouble with my buddies internet connection. I installed the correct drivers for the ethernet adapter and the ISP is able to send data to the modem, and recieve data back. I can ping IP's (XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX) but not domains (www.whatever.com) When he opens Internet Explorer (I just told him about Firefox) it shows an error page - cannont display this page or whatever. The Internet Options are all set to what Cox says, and everything is set to how they said it should be. However, we are still not able to connect to websites. I reseated and reinstalled the ethernet adapter, and the problem is still there. Any ideas?

Thanks!

You have a DNS server problem -- either you not pointing to it or it being down. Typing " ipconfig /all |more " at the command prompt will give you a pile of information including "DNS Servers . . . . nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn" The DNS address can be obtained dynamically or can be hard-coded by going into your network properties.

Okay guys,

It was a 'broken' or corrupted WinSock. Pay VERY close attention and do EXACTLY as I say and you will have it fixed in about 2 minutes.

*NOTE* You will need your 98 CD. Either that, or the .cab files stored locally on your computer.

This is what you do.

Right Click Network Neighbourhood
Click Propterties
Highlight TCP/IP
Click the UNINSTALL button
Click OK
When you get prompted to reboot, CLICK NO
Click Start->Run
type in 'regedit' without the quotes
Inside the registry, brose to the following folder.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->System->CurrentControlSet->Services-<VxD

At the bottom of the VxD folder their is a KEY called Winsock2. Right click Winsock2 and DELETE it.

If you click the minus sign on VxD and go to the bottom of the Services folder (this is the folder VxD is in) you will see ANOTHER Winsock2. Delete this Winsock2.

Close the registry editor.

Right click Network Neighbourhood
click properties
click the INSTALL button
Choose PROTOCALL from the list and click OK
In the left hand side select MICROSOFT and in the right hand side select TCP/IP.
Click OK
Click APPLY and then OK

You may be asked for your Windows CD at this point. You can:

a) Try and point the system to c:\windows, c:\windows\system, or c:\windows\system32. Sometimes the files are cached their. (So try them all)

b) Try and point to where you .cab files are stored. If you have a Dell or something like it, the files will probably be in c:\windows\options\cabs. Otherwise they may be in c:\win98, or really anywhere. Try searching for .cab files. If you see alot that are named something like win98.cab then point to that folder

c) Insert your CD and point the browse over to it.

When you are asked to reboot, click YES
When your computer boots back up, enjoy your internet.

I got this from another forum I post in, it did work, hopefully it will help you out too!

Only problem is that i have windows XP, and there is no uninstall option with TCP/IP selected

I tried the command "NETSH INT IP RESET C:\Resetlog.txt" but nothing changed
