broadband in college dorms

Do most colleges offer dsl in the dorms? If so, do they allow you to use them for computer games? In high school right now, just wondering.

many do, some don't. Call the IT helpdesk at the school and they'll usually help you with that.

I attend RIT, www.rit.edu and on Campus we have the benefit of having Dual OC-3 / One T3[or T1] connections combined, and the dorm jacks're maxed at 10Mbps [System regulated, Jacks're ready for 100/1000] And it will also depends on the college you're attending to. tech school are more likely to offer high speed connections, however we do not offer DSL, we offer Enternet Jacks Rj-45s... I attend U. of Pitt, www.pitt.edu and on campus our ports were 100 Mbps. They changed authentication scheme for the network since last year. It is more difficutl to run "servers" on the lan, even if it be for gaming. I know that XBOX LIve doesn't work since, the xboxes can't authenticate and get an IP addy, unless you use ics or something.

Most colleges offer some sort of internet access in dorms. Most of them are via straight ethernet jacks and are regulated by them; they may have any combination of high speed connections for the entire campus. I go to the University of Pennsylvania and I'm not even sure what their total bandwidth is any more but it's huge (100s if not 1000s of mbps) and doubles something like every 6 months.

That's interesting. So the students get bandwidth caps every month?

To my knowledge (haven't lived in the dorms for 2 years but I think it's still the same), students do not have bandwidth caps. The jacks are set to 10mbps so in that way you are limited. You aren't supposed to run servers and the likes but you can get away with it as long as you don't max out your connection 24/7 (i'm sure they would notice then). The bandwidth colleges need/use is pretty amazing.

As a RIT student, I don't get bandwidth cap just the speed cap, we are allowed to have our servers if we want as long it's DCHP Enabled and abides by the Code of Conduct, and am not running a business then I'm free to do whatever I want. It really depends on the Unvi. and Colleges all over... They all differ.

Depends. Virginia Tech = yes. University of Pheonix Online = no.

At the school I attend we have a 100 Mbps network in all the dorms. Speeds are usually at least 4000 down and 5000 up but it's all behind a nice firewall so no one can run a server, etc. Cost is $50/semester to hook up to it and there is no authentication process which is nice not having to deal with it. One of our dorms is wireless but they are working on eventually wiring it.
