Broadband ROCKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got cable internet access for the first time. I have never been on broadband connection ever before. I never knew the internet could be this fast. I ran some bandwith tests on a few web sites and I'm getting 1.4-1.5Mbps/sec. I can download a 1MB file in under 8 seconds compared to 4-5 minutes before. Playing on-line games before was impossible, near 500ms ping, now there some servers where I get under 10ms.

must be nice........ I think cable is available now in my area, but i like my dialup ISP now, i wish theyd get their DSL in my town soon.

I am now officially jealous.

I still connect through 56k, because we can't get anything at my house.

Anyone know of any alternatives to DSL/Cable? I've looked at various wireless broadband solutions, but they're all $$$ and don't perform as well, generally speaking.

Yeah, I've been to a guys house to work on his computers, and he had cable. Needless to say, downloading the necessary drivers and critical updates was a breeze. Not so here at home, where I can't get cable...or any broadband at all. The cable company is supposed to be putting in cable sometime this year, though, so I can only be hopeful.

Going to cable was great for me and VPN to work, but the better part was that I got all the people who bought computers from me to go up to Cable as well..
Now i can support them right here form home without having to make housecalls!

I also just got broadband and I could not believe the speed downloading stuff. Here you can get cable for $25.00, it is a new rollout and they only have 130 customers, small town here. I hope I never have to go back to dialup.

ADSL rollout in the UK is becoming much better now. Imagine it....in a few years time where Modems are caveman technology and ADSL is the standard internet connection with Cable connections being available to the hardcore users.

My friend who lives in Liverpool has BT ADSL. On the weekend, three of us were playing Medal of Honour over his broadband connection - we were all getting pings of 30-40ms, it could've easily handled more players.

I cannot wait to get ADSL in my area - I can get NTL cable modem but I'd prefer BT ADSL.

I got Verizon DSL and I think it's slow. I only download at about 100kb/s. The only good thing is that I can now play online games with zero lag.

If thats Kilobytes/second, ??????

I've got 512kbps cable, which maxes out at about 75kb/s. It's very nippy in use, even shared between 4 people...

That said, I've just migrated from a 56K modem (which would never manage more than 33.6, due to poor line quality) so it's incredibly fast in comparison.

I'm still deeply jealous of those with 1.5mbit pipes

yea i can't wait i'm getting cable installed on the 7th. i'm sick of 56k it sucks. man u can't complain about 100kb/s, that's 20 times faster then 56k still. if i can download at over 50 i'll be very satisfied

Yes, indeed it ROCKS!

You can dowload Linux CD images at 650mb size in NO TIME! I recently downloaded 5 cd images from open source sites while my wife played a few card games on her PC. This would have seriously taken 10 hours on our old dial-up connection.

It takes 5 minutes to download Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6.0 from download to Finished Install from Windows Update!
On dial-up it was nearly 2 HOURS! I couldn't build a hard drive at home on dial-up due to slow downloads unless I started them before I went to bed and let them creep along all night and God Forbid the Server at Redmond hic-cupped! Install Win98SE, go to Windows Update site, get Critical Fix package, dowload, reboot, dial-up again, Get Newest Explorer version, DirectX, Mapped Drives Shutdown..blah,blah,blah.........took a whole WEEKEND!!!!

Our dial-up provider hadn't completed the DSL lines to our new neighborhood which was annexed from "country" to "city" just before building began a few years back and we decided whomever won the race, DSL or Cable, would get our business. It is more expensive but when I look at the HUGE amount of time saved, it is worth the money. (Twice the money, but don't tell em I said that!)
