BSODs after memory upgrade

Hey all,

I just swapped out a Kingston 512 DDR for a matched pair of Mushkin 512's (1 GB), and now i'm getting BSODs, lockups and such.

Mobo: Intel 865GBF
Proc: P4 3.06 (800 FSB, HT)
Old memory: 512 Kingston
New memory: 512 Mushkin Blue DDR 3200 (x2)

I tried reseating them, I have done the same for my video card and PCIs. I also tried a power supply (400w) from my other computer without luck. I also tried using bank 0 and bank 1.

I've ran Memtest-86 and get some odd results. With both sticks in (bank 0 or 1) I get errors. If I take a stick out and leave one in (it doesn't matter which is removed), the errors go away. Thus, each stick appears to be good.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Update: I found out it functions at 333 MHz, but not 400 MHz.

400 MHz + dual channel = failure
400 MHz + single channel = success
333 MHz + dual channel = success

Has anyone had issues with either the 865GBF mobo or Mushkin Blue memory?

Thanks!

Unlinke single channel, dual channel memory mode is VERY fussy about timing, which is why you should always order memory from someone like Crucial or Corsair that has an online database that lets you look up the proper memory for your specific mobo.

Mushkin may have a similar database on ther website. You may also find a FAQ on their site that lists specific timing settings for your mobo. I know Corsair does.

There's nothing wrong with the memory, but all memory is not the same and for modern high performance rigs you must match the memory to the mobo.

You DO want to use dual channel mode - it's better performance.

Do a Google search for your mobo and memory and maybe you'll find a link to a post with memory timing settings that work. Check Google newsgroups as well.

Here's Mushkin's tech forums: http://forums.mushkin.com/phpbb2/index.php

I assume you're not overclocking? If you are, don't. Dual channel mode is less stable. Get it stable without the overclock and then SLOWLY work the clock up until you find the max stable speed. It will be lower than it was in single channel. No big deal. The performance gain from dual channel will be more significant than the overclock.
