I heard that theres no point in going with a non-DDR3 board, but is there a new line of AMD CPU's that won't be compatible with a DDR2 board coming out anytime soon?

I don't know much about what AMD is coming out with in the near future. I guess it just depends on what you are willing to spend. Obviously, if you are wanting a DDR3 board, it's going to cost you a little bit more. Did you have a budget in mind for building the computer? Are you building it from scratch - do you need a case, power supply, video card, etc?

You will probably have to go with a DDR2 board. Here is an option:
Motherboard - $65
CPU - $102
Memory - $53 (this is for 2GB, if you want 4GB, it would be about $100)
That's about $220 right there, that leaves the rest for a case, power supply, hard drive, DVD/CD Drive, Video card, mouse/keyboard.

I would go with the slightly improved 785G over 780G, since they're essentially the same price within a few dollars.

Yes, that would work as well. I would look over the reviews since only 48% of the people gave it 5 eggs.

And any reason in paticular to go with that X2 550? Considering the price/performance vs X2 240: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3663&p=8

There was no reason in particular, if you don't need the extra speed and want to keep the costs down even more, the X2 240 would be a good choice.

Unless you have DDR2 sticks lying around, DDR3 is the way to go.

I am using the Foxcomm board that was originally posted. Running Phenom II 955BE. Had to upgrade bios, using as a stop gap until I get cash for a Xfire motherboard and some DDR3. I probably should of just saved for the new setup, but this works okay.
