1. Used for light gaming (half life 2, portal, etc), young kids watching movies

2. ~$600

3. USA

4. Not a fanboy

5. I hope to reuse from my old build:
Case - Antec 3700AMB
Optical Drive - some sony DVD RW
Monitor - BENQ FP931 19-Inch / 1280 x 1024 / 16ms

6. Yes, I've read others' threads which have given me ideas on components (see below).

7. Possible OC once system is stable and predictable.

8. Gaming Resolution - 1280 x 1024

9. I plan to buy within a week and build soon after.

My last build was about seven years ago. I tend to keep my PCs as long as I can.
I don't want cutting-edge, just something that will function fine after five years or more.

The components I'm considering are:

CPU - Intel i5 2500K
MB - ??
RAM - ?? Probably 4 GB to 8GB
Storage - >=60 GB SSD Drive SATA III - Crucial 64GB C300
>=1 TB HDD - Samsung 1 TB Spinpoint 7200 RPM
GPU - ?? I really have no clue on current GPUs
PSU - ??
Fans - Need suggestions for a couple of relatively quiet 120mm case fans

I'm open to suggestions on everything.

^ the link for GPU is the same as ram
i would recommend the nvidia 460 768mb, but those aren't cheap atm
at that resolution, an ati 5670 for ~$70-80 will probably be able to run most things medium to high, you can probably find a 5770, or 6770 for ~$100 which may let you move up to a higher res in the future

the corsair 430 should be enough to power the core i5 + 5770 or even 5850/6850 level cards. the 500w might not be worth it as i'm not sure if it'd be in the 80% efficiency range at <100w (idle)

if you have a microcenter nearby, they have good deals on cpu + mobo combos

David's and Dominion's builds are good, depending on whether or not you need an OS. One thing to keep in mind however is that if your DVD-RW is IDE, then you will need to get a new one because newer motherboards don't have IDE ports.
