I'm building a HTPC but I've realized that everytime I've hooked up my computer to my TV, and my audio into my home reciever, I get a buzz in the audio. Should I look for sound solution that doesn't simply plug into a regular stereo output, like something that has a toslink output? Would that take care of the buzz?

Toslink (optical audio) should take care of it. I had the same problem with my nForce 2 board -- I was just using the stereo headphone output and when I hooked it into my home receiver I got a buzzing sound. I'm not sure what it is exactly that does it, but I'd bet that toslink would take care of it.

It might be a ground loop problem.

If it is just the auido connection that has this problem (which is probably right), check out the Chaintech AV-710 for an optical toslink connection. As an added bonus, a digital connection will allow you to send a Dolby Digital signal to your receiver for surround sound from DVDs.

Do they sell any cheap ground loop interrupter that you can buy at any home improvement store?

If the devices are located near eachother you may be able to eliminate your ground loop by plugging both devices into the same power strip.

If it's a ground loop problem, wouldn't an optical connection solve it as "ground" is not transferred through the optical signal?

That is correct, however IMO it's better to solve these problems than hide from them. You don't want a lot of stay voltage wandering through your equipment.

Good point. Luckily he'll just have to worry about the display if he gets the digital card
