Building my own notebook?

Is it possible to build your own notebook?

I know that you can purchase ram, video cards, harddrives, and optical drives, but what about the screen, mobo, and processor?

Will it be significantly cheaper than getting a dell/toshiba/ibm?

i think it "can" be done but it would be hard as HELL and probably alot more expensive than buying one.

You could probably find these sorts of parts on ebay and other auction type sites. However, it will almost certainly be more expensive than just buying a new/used notebook (think of how ridiculous prices are on ebay).

It would have to also be HUGE to accomodate standard swappable parts.

It would be a major pain in the ass, and you would wind up using an OEM laptop case to house it.

You are much better off buying a used notebook.

You can but only within the list which manufacturers provide.
Building a notebook is extremely difficult.How could us build the cooling-system?And the case?It is almost impossible.

Unless you happen to own a machine shop, electical engineering firm and a plastics manufacturer, no you cannot build your own laptop.

And if you did, it'd still be cheaper buying one from somewhere else

They are those cool "desknote" things (see their website)

The ECS solution is pretty good, except for the fact that they require an external power supply/battery. After all is said and done, it's about $700 cheaper than an equiv. dell, but it weighs a lot more.

Customizing one is going to be more expensive than just buying it. There are company's out there that sell some whitebox Laptop's where you can put in your own ram, hdd, cpu, wifi, modem, netowrk, and other parts. Usually though they buy them from the original Manufactor like clevo, Mitac, Kpok, or quanta. So there ya go. Best bet is to buy laptop from somone.
