i'm planning to upgrade my system in 1 month's time. But i am planning to buy the graphics card in 1-2 weeks time.it's been about 1.5 years since my last upgrade..

1)current config-amd athlon dual core.2.3ghz +4400,2 gb ddr ram,160+80 gb HD,viewsonic 22"lcd,etc.(i think i got the most things covered),and ya MB is m2v-mx se
2)my main usage is for running 2d and 3d softwares +gaming(also v imp )
3)i'm buying all the parts except my graphics card from India
4)i do want to keep all the current parts as i want 2 PCs.
5)i don't have any brand preference(just want the best parts available within my budget)
6)my budget is graphics card +700- 800$(i'm not going to buy a new lcd, sound system or items like keyboard mouse etc.)

so my points are...
1)my current MB is asus msv-mx-se with pcie 1.0,will my new graphics card work for the time being[MP ati hd 4870 512 mb or 1gb]
2)what's the power required to run it
3)i'm planning to get it from usa.(as a gift)so is it fine or i shall i buy it from my country only(india)what about the warranty(do they provide worldwide warranty or something)
4)is hd4870 good for 3d application as well as games?

i'm a newbie ...so please hepl me out..
thanks...

1) Yes it will work, what PCI-E 1.1 and 2.0 do is give you a larger possible bandwidth limitation, if your card isn't anywhere near the bandwidth limits then it doesn't see any real benefits. I'm not sure how much of the PCI-E 1.0 bandwidth the 4870 is going to saturate/exceed but the card will definitely work provided you have the necessary power connections.
2) The power draw changes depending on the load you give it, I'll look around for the max/min power draw for a 4870.
3) While the warranty should be a universal thing, you might want to contact the people at Asus and ask if you'll be able to use the warranty if you buy/get it from the US but live in India.
4) The 4870 is an excellent card for any 3d app or game out there. And at your resolution it shouldn't have any problems whatsoever.

I don't know prices in india...

So:

AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition - 250$
MB Gigabyte MA790GP-DS4H - 150$
DDR2 4GB (2x2GB kit) PC6400 (800MHz) OCZ, gold XTC - 80$
HDD Seagate ST3500320AS, 500 GB 32MB, S-ATA300, NCQ-II, 7200.11 - 85$
OCZ power supply StealthXStream 500W - 85$
Thermaltake VC2000BNS, mid tower Mambo - 65$

I hope you like it...and say if you want some optical drive, maybe 750GB hard disk or better power supply...

Why buy a Phenom when they're being outperformed by Intel's quads?

Why buy a quad at all is what I'm wondering, besides Intel's performance quads are the Q9550 and up, those things are beasts. I'd recommend an E8400 + Asus P5Q Pro or SE, whichever is cheaper in India, cheapest reputable ram you can get, 2gb if you're on xp or linux, 4gb if you're on vista or planning to use 7.

Not sure what power supplies are available in India so I don't feel I could accurately recommend what companies make good ones. Listing the companies sold there would help a bit.

Based on what you'll be running, I'd say look for 500w PSUs or thereabouts, Tagan and Corsair would be good choices, Coolermaster would work as well, never really heard of Power Safe so not sure what to say about them.

Quad = more expensive up front, uses more power, generates more heat, generally needs a noisier cooler, gives no benefits at all (actually it's slower) when the software doesn't support more than 2 cores.
Unless you have a legitimate reason for a quad's power, it's generally a huge waste.

http://www.theitwares.com/smps/smps.htm
this site has the almost standard ongoing prices....for i guess everything
but i dont trust it blindly..
anyway just to give an idea...
btw 48 indian rupee = 1$..so you can do your math if you want...and my budget it at max 40000Rs(800$)
btw just see the price here in india for HD4870 1GB DDR5..its 19500+shipping and all=400$ :brokenheart:
which costs in u.s.a. around 250$

Asus P5Q: 8750
Intel E8400: 9275
2x Transcend 2Gb 800mhz stick: 1125x2 = 2250
Tagan BZ500 500w: 4625
Antec 300: 3575
Total: 28475
Antec 900 instead of Antec 300: 31850

Still need a hard drive, since all the companies listed there are decent to good, just find the total size you want and find the cheapest one among that list.
I'm also assuming that when they say processor, it's retail, so you won't need an aftermarket cooler unless you plan on overclocking.
