Ok, so i was searching for this type of comparisons for some time now, and i never found anything wich made me even more anxious to try my FX 6100 on Win 8 since it was said that bulldozer runs better on win 8 .

So today i did some comparison tests between Win 7 x64 and Win 8 x64 (RTM, updated).

My computer :

AMD FX 6100 @ 3800 GHZ
GPU : MSI Radeon 7850 Power Edition
RAM : 8GB Kingston Hyperx 1600Mhz
Motherboard : Asus AM3+ something.

Cinebench 11.5

Win8

Multi : 4.72

Single : 0.95

Win 7

Multi : 4.72

Single : 0.94

---------------------------
PC Mark 7 - Basic

Win 8 : 2597

Win7 : 2785

---------------------------
PassMark 8

Win8 : 1901

Win 7 : 2115

---------------------------
3dMark Vantage

Win8 :

3DMark Score
17734 3DMarks
Graphics Score
19093
CPU Score
14614
Jane Nash
59.45 FPS
New Calico
52.28 FPS
AI Test
2032 operations/s
Physics Test
19 operations/s

Win7 :

3DMark Score
17781 3DMarks
Graphics Score
19142
CPU Score
14654
Jane Nash
59.76 FPS
New Calico
52.25 FPS
AI Test
2022 operations/s
Physics Test

Wasnt this CPU family supposed to work better on Win 8 ? I remember tomshardware doing some tests in the Consumer Preview and they got like 10+ fps in world of warcraft

Hmmmmm doesn't look like the new scheduler did much to improve the situation.

Maybe the benefit is observable on the 8T chip.

P.S. I generally do not trust THg data.

You need to run real programs preferably ones with poor coding. Preferably run 2 * 2-thread apps, 4-thread apps, 6-thread apps.

Don't worry guys, AMD's processors are super special awesome, and anyone that recommends Intel is biased!

I´m more curious to why people would expect otherwise. There are never any magic solution to fix poor.

There are some gains in Win 8 but it's for all the CPUs.
In the meantime, considering the magic promises of AMD crowd that :
"It is (was) beta BIOS, wait till launch!"
"Win 7 MS patch will fix this"
"Windows 8 scheduler will fix this"
"Future will fix FX by making all programs 8 threads and equal workload in every thread so we don't lag behind"

Is there ever a promise/hope, about a failed product, that actually became true (Intel or AMD side) ?

HD2900 is also still waiting for its driver.

If it doesnt perform from day 1, it wont perform ever.

Windows 8 is garbage imho. I've used it for many months, and it's just dumbed-down garbage much better suited to phone/tablet.

I'm deciding whether to install Windows 8 on one of my partitions right now. Maybe I give it a try and see what is all the fuss about .

Thats correct.

The removal of the Areo and basic to XP so to say just to get abit more batterylife for tablets is hillarious.

Windows 8 in its current form will be shortlived. Just like certain management at MS when stockowners aint happy.

One Windows to rule them all isnt ready to happen yet. Looking at the huge blunder MS did with Windows RT. They should simply have used the effort on a Windows 8 tablet edition instead.

Seems to be a love hate relationship, either you love it and it works for you, or you believe Windows 95 is the crowning achievement of MS and anything that deviates from it is utter garbage.

I've been using Windows 8 since it became available for download, I like it. When I first started using it I'd use the regedit to get the start menu back, then I started using Start8. After that expired I just started using the normal UI and I find everything is there already it's just slightly different.

Seems to be a lot of the "Old Dog/New Tricks" sigma taking place, on the surface Windows 7 and 8 are very different, at the core and within that "look" they're virtually the same.

It is just harder to find and takes more clicks to get to.

Whats harder about it? I'm not getting what the problem is, all my programs are right there I can move them where I want them to be as well so any game/software I use a lot can be right in front of my face next to my RSS style email and weather feeds.

I don't like having the screen replaced and full screen metro popping up when I want to open different apps. I also don't like that they degraded the UI from transparency/etc to the flat old-school color scheme. Other than that it's okayish.

Overall it's a few steps sideways, a few steps back, and some very questionable new features that really seem only useful for tablet/touch/phone.

Whats wrong with the full screen metro UI if all you're doing is opening a desktop app? It's not like you were going to continue to view the desktop while browsing the old Start Menu looking for your app anyways.

Besides, why are you going into the metro UI if you're just grabbing an APP off your desktop - why don't you have shortcuts on your desktop - or the superbar for that matter (it's still there)?

What about transparency?

I think people are making Metro UI a bigger deal than it is. I don't like it, but I have to watch it for like 0.1s before I click on desktop mode, once in 4 days that I restart the PC. Big deal :|
Also I like the more "sharp" look, without transparency and rounded corners, and everything is bit smoother also.

I know there are some ways to trick Win8 into giving you transparency, though I seem to have it bugged somehow, sometimes when I move a window, the transparency glitches. Possibly a driver issue (GTX670).

This is what I used to get transparency in win8, but it's obviously not working all that well, and looks a good bit worse than win7 :
http://www.askvg.com/hidden-secret-trick-to-enable-activate-aero-glass-in-windows-8-aero-lite-theme/

Maybe pebkac But if the code is still there, why the fork are they trying so hard to hide it?

And who says I'm not going to continue viewing the desktop when browsing a menu? I don't keep shortcuts for every app/game I have, that would be insane. The previous start menu was fantastic. Besides, sometimes I'm going to run through a particular procedure, and have a notepad file with instructions up, unless I have two screens open, as soon as the start screen appears in win8, it fills the screen.

You know, I'd be INSTANTLY 1000000x happier if they merely included a half-screen version of the start screen. After all, most people have at least 1366x768 screens, and most of us tech types have 1920x1200 to 2560x1600. Its asinine at best to have the start screen do a hostile takeover of the entire screen.

See, that's all fine and dandy imho.

My problem comes with the fact that they FORCE it on you rather than just give you more options. I don't even have a problem with metrostart and nontransparency being the default win8 look/interface. I do have a problem with a less intrusive start menu and aero glass being thrown under the bus to satisfy a design ethos that is obviously focused on touch/low horsepower devices.

I didn't have to do any of that stuff, Windows 8 (in it's current form) has Aero the same as Win7.

Windows 7 didn't have any other option than the default start menu, if you want more options download them - there are already a lot of options available and will probably be more after release.

I have zero reason to want to use Win8, other than testing. I'll probably reload my SSD back to Win7 in the next week or two.

I have not used it, but I have to say the metro screen or whatever they call it is butt ugly.

Why would you want to have your expensive desktop computer display look like a tablet? (BTW, my feeling of tablets is that they are in the same stage computers were in the days of 800 mhz celerons and Win ME, but that is a separate rant)

Anyway, I wont say that it is terrible, since I have not used it. I just cannot comprehend why MS did not just provide an option to revert permanently to the conventional desktop and start menu, since all the code to run them seem to be there. Normally, I think the criticism of microsoft as such a terrible, monopolistic company is overblown, but in this case, they just seem to want to insult conventional desktop users, since it would have been so easy to remove the criticism by making an option to revert to the conventional desktop.
