Incognito of the Dolphins took hazing of a teammate way too far and is probably done in the NFL. Reports of racial slurs could take this to an entirely new level from bullying to racial discrimination in the workplace.

ESPN

This was posted in the NFL thread when the subject came up but this is going to extend beyond a week to week NFL thread.

I hope this gets exposed at the deepest level.

I hate bullying.

The NFL could easily change their name to the NCL, the No Character League. As long as you can play, it doesn't matter what a giant piece of shit you are, somebody will be interested. He'll be done for this season, pretend to go to anger counseling and next season will be on the training camp roster of whoever needs a lineman.

Has there been any anonymous reports from current/former players about how bad it's been in the past? While I believe that bullying is not acceptable, there are bad precedents that carry forwards due to momentum. I'm curious to know how Martin's treatment has differed from other Miami OLine players and others across the league.

I recall Dez Bryant picking up a $54,000 dinner tab while he was a rookie.

Yeah this really does need its own thread.

On one hand, you have the manliest of the manly: the pro athlete. These guys are damn near made of steel. On the other hand, a lot of them are pure jackasses: they are thugs that can run. What happens when the two meet? One has to give.

Fights? Threats? Blackballing?

Also of note is Icognito's (apparent) dad posting on message boards sounding even more like a jackass than his son.

Dez Bryant has ~$8million guaranteed, and makes $2million a year, and will make $12million+ a year once his rookie contract expires.

It seems these demands for money in the Dolphins locker room were put on all rookies, even those making minimum salaries. And its gone beyond dinner checks as well. And it apparently isnt a one time thing like the widely spread dinner check. It appears younger team members have reportedly been hit up for lots of money repeatedly.

Its totally improper to keep asking guys making less than a million a year for more money when you make over $4million a year(Incognito has a 3 year $12.9mm contract). I mean Martin was 42 overall. Thats second round and that means he has a 4 year contract in the range of $4million, so with signing bonus his annual salary is less than $1million. Take into account agent fees, taxes, etc. That $1million is not much.

My theory is, they kept asking Martin for money. He wised up an refuses. They in turn intimidate and harass him, basically making his life hell. Which is totally improper.

Rookie hazing is a rite of passage in the NFL. Players will be forced to endure REALLY bad haircuts, forced to carry veterans helmets and pads, taped to a goalpost and given a Gatorade shower, maybe forced to pick up a dinner tab. And rookies with big contracts would have to pick up a BIG dinner check. But it usually stops after training camp and it doesn't veer off into violence or recurring harassment. What Incognito did sounds like it crossed way way way over the line from normal hazing to outright thuggery.

As bad as his behavior is, I doubt he's done in the NFL. He's successful, he's been a Pro Bowler, and there's plenty of teams with a strong need to shore up their offensive line with a proven veteran. Sadly, most teams don't give two shits about personal behavioral problems if they come attached to someone with talent (this isn't exclusive to the NFL by any means).

I was all ready to come in here spouting "Isn't football all about bullying the other team though? Isn't it literally pushing them around and imposing your will on them through force? What is football without bullying?"

That guy has mental problems though. There has to be something wrong with him to do that.

What's the difference? To me, hazing is bullying, just institutionalized and performed mostly due to momentum.

The minor hazing in the NFL consists of rookies buying a dinner, carrying pads/helmets and bringing in breakfast for your squad of players maybe once a week (doughnuts and such). This is usually what is expected. Incognito took it a lot further.

I admit there's probably a lot of grey area here.

But to me hazing is a rite of passage that (right or wrong) is meant to solidify a new member's standing in an organization. Washing a car, picking up laundry, even stuff like drinking tequila out of a baby bottle at a party - that's all hazing imo (if done properly). One important distinction between hazing and bullying is that people properly hazing immediately reenforce their connection to the person being hazed in a positive way as soon as the hazing activity is over.

Bullying, on the other hand, is a sick activity by a sick person who is trying elevate himself by kicking another person, and is trying to damage his victim as much as possible.

yeah rookies buy dinner etc. Jonathan Martin IS NOT A ROOKIE and the shit was still going on.

Icgonito sounds like a bully. most likely taught by his dad (have you seen his tweets? guy is a slimeball)

Just because you are a huge strong guy does not mean you are above getting bullied. its bullshit that it happens.

I don't have a problem with minor hazing, as it servers a purpose. These guys were absolute stars in high school and college; they enter the NFL and no matter how good they were, are pretty much average now. A lot of them do need a reality check and finding out you're equal with your teammates can really help.

People like Incognito need to be removed from the NFL permanently. They give players like Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, and such a bad name. There is a ton of good guys with a lot of class that play in the NFL, we just don't hear about them because moron, thugs who were bullies their entire lives make it in as well.

I do agree with the sentiment he will be picked up by another team if the NFL doesn't ban him entirely. Sadly, teams don't care how their players act, just how they play.

It depends on how far his actions went and how far the NFL takes his punishment. Harassment in the workplace is very much a no-no. The NFL and the teams will want no part of it because they could be held liable for his harassment of others in the future. If he does still play in the NFL, you can fully expect his deal to heavily incentive laden and have an indemnification clause.

That said I foresee the NFL handing out a heavy suspension if everything turns out to be true. I could see a multi-year/life time ban in the realm of possibility if racial epithets were used. If racial epithets were used, I dont see him ever playing again, multi-year/life time ban or not.

If I remember correctly in the case of Dez Bryant, he was asked to carry the veteran's pads back to the locker room during training camp and he refused even though this was the tradition and that's when he got stuck with the dinner check.

stolen from the NFL thread:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9...sed-slurs-messages-jonathan-martin?src=mobile

Multiple sources confirmed to ESPN that the following is a transcript of a voice message Incognito left for Martin in April 2013, a year after Martin was drafted:

"Hey, wassup, you half n----- piece of s---. I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. [I want to] s--- in your f---ing mouth. [I'm going to] slap your f---ing mouth. [I'm going to] slap your real mother across the face [laughter]. F--- you, you're still a rookie. I'll kill you."
