My confusion doesn't come so much from the fact that he's a huge guy getting bullied, but a huge guy with the mentality & toughness to play in the NFL... well maybe not after all. We'll see, I hope so.

Maybe their personalities & culture has changed over the years more than I realized.

He is a huge guy with that mentality, surrounded by guys just as big (and bigger) with the same (and worse) mentalities. He was a relatively new player, surrounded by veteran "leaders" who would bully him.

I guess you also subscribe to the idea men can't be abused in relationships or raped as well.

There are different kinds of toughness... Are you really this naive?

I haven't looked them up but on the radio, they're saying Incognito's father is going off on everyone, calling Philbin a loser, saying that Martin and Pouncey are drug users, saying shit about the GM, etc...

No wonder his son acts like an ass.

It's just surprising to me is all. Among the different kinds of toughness, bully resistance seems exactly the type of toughness, physical & mental, that anyone who had what it takes to make it to the NFL would have in abundance.

Hopefully my surprise doesn't further anger any more of the veterans here, and... oh crap. Now I'M getting bullied noooooO!

ugh. Mental toughness to do his job is not the same as mental toughness in regard of a bully.

One of my buddies in college was 6'3 240. tough as nails on the wrestling mat. He was all business. If he got hurt or hurt someone well bummer.

Off the mat? one of the nicest and most gentle guys i have ever seen. He would get upset at the silliest things and would get his feelings hurt.

being able to withstand tons of shit on the field/mat/whatever is one thing. mental abuse is another.

Question: Is someone who walks away from an unhealthy environment inherently less tough than someone who reacts violently to that same environment, or someone who passively accepts it?

I think something that people should keep in mind is that Jonathan Martin doesn't owe us anything. He's not required to play football for our enjoyment. It's his job, nothing more or less. The instant that the experience of playing football doesn't justify the check he is being handed, he is under no obligation to stay. Most people saying that Martin should "stand up and fight" would respond to an equivalent situation in their workplace by similarly quitting and perhaps by filing a hostile work environment suit.

A couple Dolphins miss Incognito. I don't think Martin is going to be back there..

This guy has ZERO obligation to do anything for anyone except himself & his family imo.

Hopefully no one is criticizing martin on that front, or judging him for his course of reaction to getting bullied. Aside from the guy who posted he'd take kicks to the testicles for millions of dollars (lol) I don't think anyone here has.

You are 100% correct.

The part you are missing though, is that it was him vs the rest of the team. So you have one guy who is not used to being bullied. The thought never even entered his mind, so he has no experience on dealing with it. That one tough guy is now face with 50 other tough guys acting against him. He wants to beat every single one of them to a pulp but he knows that is not possible. So since he can't fight, what can he do? He's not going to run away, that's not his style. He isn't going to snitch, he isn't a rat. So what is he going to do? Snap and shoot up the place?

A miami sports talking head just put it in context I don't agree with, but can understand a possible angle to the decision. Maybe: His three choices were to either go to the coaches, then forever be the guy that snitched; or fight back and be the guy the media reports is fighting not just teammate but fellow lineman (supposed to be cohesive unit) & "leadership" appointee no less lol; or else just take it. Quitting might have seemed like his best option.

Still, it's too hard to believe a giant who played football all his life would back down from this. Maybe incognito was too much of a wild card, watching some of the videos, considering his family was involved, or mentioned.

Hope martin gets back & finds great success in the league somewhere (else).

I know it's "you're either with my opinion or against my opinion", so pick a side or you'll be assigned one if you're in between, but just in case I thought I'd get this post visible on the current page anyway.

I don't understand doesn't this kind of stuff happen on the field? Seems it would just toughen Martin up.

The talk, for sure. But I don't think anyone's literally getting EXTORTED for thousands of dollars out there!

Just bizarre.

From all reports, Incognito has a looooong history of being a giant (not just literal) asshole. There is no place for his behavior in any workplace. Hope he stays gone.

If Incognito (and the Fins OL) was as badass/bully to the other teams defenders, his QB would not be sacked as much (leading the NFL with 35 sacks allowed).

He is probably a typical bully: larger than most, but when confronted, really a coward. That would explain why he could talk smack to the defense all game, yet let them through to the QB so much.

I haven't read a lot of the replies to the thread but I can totally see the psychological toll having that type of treatment would take on someone regardless of how big and tough they are.

To me I would hate having to go to work where I was repeatedly treated like it sounds like he was treated and to not have anyone stand up for him which it sounds like was the case then I say hell yes he was right to walk away.

I hope that Incognito is left branded for the rest of his life for what his accused of if it comes out to be true which I believe it is from what I have read and for the rest of the teammates to participate they are just as much responsible in my eyes...

I can't imagine any of those teammates would have wanted to switch places and be the one targeted.

Hope the guy comes out smelling like roses when the dust settles.

Man.. this whole story seems off.

Ryan Tannehill: "If you asked Jonathan who his best friend is on this team he'd say Richie Incognito."
Tannehill: "Ritchie said Jonathan was like my little brother."

Did anyone hear Bald Bryan talk about this on the Carolla show. He coached at the the High School where Martin played and said the players were all super pussies.

Icognito still sounds like a major dick, but just interesting to hear some of the other stuff surrounding this.

Meh, football is that sissy sport where they all wear pads and cushions. Real men play rugby. Or, you want a truly manly sport, you've got the lumberjack competitions, worlds strongest man competitions, and sled dog racing.

Yeah, I did hear that. Here is an interview with his high school head coach talking about Martin (the high school is Harvard-Westlake) - http://nesn.com/2013/11/jonathan-ma...ncognito-bullied-him-says-hes-perfect-target/

I caught this as well, kinda eye opening because I'm sure as it's been mentioned in this thread, but in football in the trenches all you are trying to do is impose your will or bully the guy in front of you.
