buring movies in 5.1

I'm pretty new to buring DVD's and working with various codecs and such. What I want to do is if I had a stereo mpeg movie, to burn it onto a DVD in 5.1 digital sound and play it on my home theatre. I've managed to get my hands on Acid 4.0 with the 5.1 surround plugin. I've read thru some of the help files, and I'm still lost. I'm not even sure I have the right program.

Can this be done?
Which programs do I need?

You need to record them in 5.1, and store them in a format that supports 5.1. Pirates on the net tend not to do that, as it would DRASTICALLY increase filesizes.
