burn spots on cpu?

I have an Athlon XP 2600+ mobile which I recently relocated to a new mobo. Previously, it was operating at a stable overclock at about 2.6 GHz cooled by a thermaltake volcano 12 on an Albatron KX18D Pro II mobo. When I removed the heatsink, I was suprised to see some "burn" spots on the surface of the chip, seen here. I pointed out a few spots, but there are several. While the cpu was running, the core temp never exceeded 60 degrees C. I am curious if this a sign of damage or if those connections normally get hot and some discoloration is normal. I would like to maintain the overclock as long as it is not causing significant damage.

If those are burn spots, you've got problems. The heatsink only removes heat from the area where it makes contact with the chip.

Your marks are on the circuit board area around the chip, and they appear to be between pads where components (resistors, capacitors, etc.) may be soldered on the underside of the board. Turn the chip over to see if you can spot burned components.

Them are laser cuts, not burns!

The spots were not present when the chip was new.

Those are the laser cuts that AMD does to the bridges. You can bridge a few and it unlocks the multiplier.

But yes, those are from factory, don't worry about them.

Looks normal to me, if the chip was burnt it would be on the core!

Hmm, just glaced at a pic from newegg and sure enough, they're present. Glad there's no damage. Thanks for the help.
