Interesting that buy.com CEO did not state its course of action - a PR nightmare for buy.com if they further threaten its best customers...

"Glitches let Net shoppers get free goods"
What a bunch of crock! I think I got ripped off just by paying the taxes and shipping for this winmodem.

Um, how accurate is this article?

At Buy.com, a coupon meant to be worth $50 off any order of $500 or more actually gave $50 off any purchase, making any item sold for $50 or less free to the buyer. Executives said the coupon was still in development and was not supposed to be released yet. But someone using a "crawler" to electronically monitor the site found the coupon and posted its code on a Web site.

If your order was less than $50 its not free? And I really doubt iamgenious used a "crawler." Geez news sites these days. Just use the word hacker and other crap no one has heard of to try to scare the public.

only one person actually followed the terms of the coupon, buying more than $500 worth of goods
LOL. But I'm pretty sure I saw one or two posts at FW of people who did use it on $500 orders.

Vladik - You're such a loser!
You arrogant prick you - "All the credit goes to me".
Who the hell cares??!

You also would be one of the first to jump up and complain if buy.com had cancelled your order before it processed. Why don't you just go down to the corner store and start sticking stuff in your pockets & then walk out - it's the same thing!

Buy.com has always been one of the best online stores to shop and will continue to be unless d*@kheads like yourself continue to steal from them!!

OUT!

It's nice to see that someone ran an article on the issue but it annoys me that people are bragging about it in public. These aren't mom and pop stores with a shoestring budget. They can get the money together if they feel the need to get a good legal team to go after folks on these. The fact that the Buy.com CEO did not mention what action they were going to take leads me to believe that this is not over by a longshot. Of course, why didn't cnet push for an answer on this and at least get a "no comment" sort of line? Are they investors or have Buy.com as advertisers possibly?

Well I guess I was the "one" that spent $500. I got an outstanding Viewsonic PF795 for about $480 shipped. That was way lower than any other place on the net and so this was a great deal.

BTW, Why not change your board name to "5-Finger-Vladik" instead of "the King". I don't think we are gonna hoist you up on our shoulders and carry you around the kingdom for your big heroic effort of contacting CNET.

Quote "About 4,500 orders were placed in the daylong binge."

NO wonder they BUY.com is PISSED ! Its going to be a long fight this one.

Quote ""What are they gonna do? They can't charge my (credit card)," said one person, identified as Sirpablo on a message board. "And I'm not sending the stuff back."

Vanity, vanity this is the kind of attitude that brings down hackers/people.

Quote "Self-proclaimed "senior deal master" Vladik, who visits several message boards each day, including Deal of Day, FatWallet.com and Ezboard.com, provided CNET News.com with a copy of his receipt. It listed charges of 5 cents for five briefcases, 33 cents in tax, and $3.95 for shipping, for a total of $4.33.

"I'm going to sell them on eGay," Vladik said. "I just saw that someone else who bought a couple of the briefcases on Staples, and he sold one for $40."

Valdik thinks he rules with his statement, it is nothing but a childish act to get little attention

This is also why anandtech and other deal forums are so scare that liabilities will be hit upon them. heh

just my 2 cent.

rainguy, you could have got that monitor a lot cheaper last week from onvia.com if you still have the $25 coupon and 10% pointclick

VH2000: No...actually, it would be like going to the store, having the owner tell you to just go right ahead and take some stuff out...you are afterall a good customer, and then when you leave calling the cops on you!

Dx-treme - you are right on!!

IronTek - No! Actually you are wrong!
They never said come on in and take everything!
The coupon clearly stated "$50. OFF OF $500." - NOT $50 OFF $50!
It's just that a lot of people found a glitch and took advantage of it!
What's worse is the people bitchin about getting their orders cancelled and saying that buy.com has no right cancelling the orders!!
I guess in your world - this would be legal shoplifting!
Stop trying to justify this behavior - especially when buy.com has been a very good and fair company to many of us!!

actually you're both wrong
its more like going into the corner drug store
picking up an item off the shelf
taking it to the register
and having it ring up for alot less than what is displayed on the sticker
as bad as it seems, i can guarantee that virtually 70% of us people won't say anything or try to play it off.
buy.com made a mistake
the article tries to make it look like we stole everything
which is obviously false. They're just trying to save their image.
what they oughta do, instead of blowing smoke, is fire the incompetent idiots who setup that coupon
most "good" business's don't put a "beta" coupon online which can be accessed by customers if the coupon is not working properly.

I know I posted this in another thread, but I just have to mention it again.

Buy.com ran a promo in the past where a posted $10 off $30 coupon would be doubled if you clicked on the face in the coupon bill thus making it a $20 off $30. This was identified in an email I got from Buy.com and was intended for "VIP" customers whatever that means.

In any case it is not unreasonable for someone to use a coupon how it works, not how it is advertised....

And yes sometimes I will not say anything about the item that rings up lower than posted because it just confuses the brain dead cashier and slow down the checkout process. If I do have a cashier with half a brain I sometimes say "if that item is on sale you should change the sign". I have never had a clerk try to charge me the higher amount when I tell them, they just say, ok thanks....

I think most of us realize we are often not the intended target for some of these deals and we often screw up marketing efforts to determine where to advertise. But to say that this is stealing is absurd. This is not like walking in a store and stuffing our pockets. At best this is like telling the drive through at McDonalds that we have a coupon and then forgetting to give it to the cashier. The seller is entirely in charge of the process of sending the item for the price we paid or canceling the order!

Unfortunately I missed out on this one :|
