If anyone remembers: I'm the guy from the "can't stand Trinitron CRT's" post a few weeks ago.

Well, although I was first unsure I've now experienced the same problems with 3 Trinitron/Diamondtron monitors (An IIyama 450, Lacie Electronblue IV and EIZO T766, all 19" flat tube)and finally decided to go for a non-flat shadowmask model instead. Yeah, so I feel like I missed the train of technical evolution, LOL, but the text looks so much better on my new EIZO F730. Two year old technology, a model that isn't even made anymore, but I wouldn't swap it for 5 Trinitrons!!! So yeah, it's not flat but who cares? <g> It runs 1280x960 at 100 Hz.

Remember, kids: *newer* (or *universally approved*) doesn't automatically mean *better*. Don't just believe the hype but look for yourself.

The seller told me an EIZO is for life. Hope he's right because I'm not sure what I will do when only aperture grill will be around

For what it's worth, I've owned 4 Trinitrons/Diamondtrons and have never had a problem with any of them. Yeah, shadowmask is known for its better text quality, but its colors are less vibrant than aperture grille.

To clarify: I didn't have technical problems. It's just that I seem to be incompatible with aperture grille. I just CAN'T stand looking at it for longer periods. Surely I'm not the ONLY one.

A quality shadowmask monitor is far better in my opinion than a quality AG. Sadly that doesn't go over well with the majority of the Anandtech users. They read one article that says to get a Sony Trinitron, bought it, never tried the rest, claim it is far superior to the monitors they have never seen, then go get an LCD since they don't really like their Trinitron that much. It is really sad that many of the shadowmask manufacturers have stopped making them...

Eizo's shadow mask mon is the best of the crt mons.

Have I tried LCD?
Yes, I bought Eizo LCD only.
Eizo LCD mon is also the best.

Text is better, lines are actually straight, convergence of colors at the edges, etc, all are generally so much better.

I thought he said that it wasn't flat. How then could the lines be straight? Now, a flat shadowmask monitor would be nice, IMHO, but I can't stand non-flat monitors of any kind.

JoHel,don`t forget you have "slot mask" type now as well .

Slot Mask

More recently, NEC and Panasonic have opted for a new method, a hybrid of Shadow Mask and Aperture Grill, combining the two technologies in an effort to attain only the advantages of each. The Slot Mask is a mix of both, with vertical slots and the firmness of the Shadow Mask (using a proper metal mask and not filaments). The resulting brightness is not as great as with Trinitron technologies, but the image gains in stability. The main monitors using this technology are made by NEC and Mitsubishi and go by names such as ChromaClear or Flatron, for Flat Tension Mask.

I actually have this type of monitor (LG 915FT Plus) which doesn`t have the normal 2 AG wire you get on Diamondtron/Trinitron monitors.

Does not matter how flat the outside is, lines can still be straight. Remember all so called flat CRt's with the exception of LG are curved on the inside.

Almost two years ago I was in a similar position. I wanted a really good monitor, and every sales guy I met pointed me to the Aperature grille ones. And every single time I pointed to the two grey horizonal lines. They thought I was nuts, but no way could I ever see myself "getting used to them". I'm into graphics, I don't care how vibrant the colours of an image are. If an image has lines through it...there's something wrong with it. I couldn't believe that most people didn't have a major issue with this sort of design. Judging by the way things are going, I guess most people are okay with this design flaw.

Jo Hel, not to worry. The Eizo F550i-W that I am using at the moment is at least 10 years old and is as bright and sharp as the day I bought it. Eizo IS forever.

AG RULES!!!!! bwuahahaha

Just thought I'd point out that AG is nearly as old as SM, AG is not newer(it is a little, but not in todays terms).

the lines annoy me too. : )

Hell I can see the lines on my parents Trinitron TV 3 lines runnin across the screen.. arrrgh.

I think its just one of those things you dont notice most of the time, but when you do, you cant get away from it.

i notice the 2 lines on my trinitron, but they don't bother me. my eyes have simply learned to ignore the lines. what does bother me is the small scratch that the middle of the screen somehow acquired. new monitor time

I went from a (crappy) shadow mask to an FD Trinitron and I have to say the lines bethered me for the first week or so I had the monitor. If you use it consistently you don't notice them any more, your mind "numbs" itself to their presence.

BTW, while I find the monitor has great colour, it's extremely bright. I usually drop the brightness to 35% just to get something I can watch for extended periods of time.
