Cable Modem and Provider Question?

Hello,

My brother is considering a cable modem. He has two questions, that I really am NOT qualified to answer.

1. The US robotics cable modem the company is trying to sell him cost $275. Is that a good deal or would he be able to save money buying his own cable modem?

2. Is @home (www.home.com) a good ISP?

Any other useful comments or information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

cmaMath

dont most cable companies supply you with a cable modem? I have cable modem and they let me borrow their modems. Pay $50 a month for 512/128. I live in Alaska, only cable modem service we have.

@home-pretty bad but you don't really have a choice.

As for the modem, as long as it's DOCSIS ready and your cable network is too you should be able to use any one you want. You can find them online for about $175. But some cable companies will make you either lease one or but through them, so check first.

He said the deal was $29 per month, $5 for installation, and $275(or $15/month) for modem.

Why are they so crappy?

I have Road Runner Cable service provided by Time Warner. The cable modem, a Motorola, was included for free. My monthly charge is $39.95...

I've heard a lot of people complain about @Home before, but i use them myself and my own experience with them couldnt be more opposite from the general opinion of them.
I get exceptionally fast speeds, never had any problems with them at all or the service. And their tech support has been extremely good. No waiting on hold, quick and helpful responses. Very friendly. Prices are also better than competing companies (at least where I live)
I couldnt be happier with @Home and would dream of wanting to switch.

Just thought I'd present an experience different from the majority of comments on @Home.

I have @Home in KY. $29.95 per month plus $10 per month modem rental. Or, buy the modem for $199. Mine happens to be the 3Com model. Free install. The only time I ever had trouble, they sent me a $20 GC to amazon.com. Nice touch. Speed is outstanding.

Ouch, they are making you pay for the modem? Do you own it then?
Is there a 1year service agreement where you lease the modem?
Thats pretty steep to get cable up and running

You can buy (you will own it) or rent the modem. No long term service agreement.

Check out [L=]http://www.dslreports.com[/L]... You can check your area, see what's available, and any problems reported or encountered with the various providers... It's a pretty good site with lots of info and forums on broadband access and their prices...

I have Roadrunner myself and my Dad has @home. My service costs 39.95 monthly and so does his with the modem included in the monthly. The advantage to them supplying the modem would be in case of modem going bad. You just give them the old one for a new one, which I have done. I do know that my dad has been frustrated many times by @home tech support and his download speed is a little less than mine. Most of the time there is not a choice for which cable supplier you get. But you can choose cable or dsl.
