I've got a cable modem, but I want to plug in my tv as well. Could I just use a standard cable splitter and some generic cable from radio shack to split the signal between the modem and the tv, or would I have to get something special?

yes you can do that.. i'm doing that as well.. i'm actually splitting it in 3.. i'm using 2 tv's and one to the cable modem..

i'm just using a generic splitter and i'm getting good performance.. i had no noticable performance issues when i split the connection.

Just make sure the splitter is rated from 5-1000 MHz and you won't have any problems.

I had trouble with my splitter, and the cable tech installed a 3 GHz splitter (!).

Some 3 way splitters will split the signal unevenly so that I higher power signal goes out a specified connection. Make sure you plug your cable modem into the one with the higher power rating and use the other two for the tv.

If your signal level is too low now, you might take a chance in lowering it by putting a spitter on, which could cause you modem to not work. I'd say try it, and see what happens. Most modems will tell you what their power levels are by browsing to 192.168.100.1 in your browser, but some modems won't.... Anything above 55db transmit power and below 10db receive could cause you some problems.

If you are considering plugging more than one tv into that outlet, I'd say get a two way splitter, and have one side go to the modem, and then plus the remaining connector into another two way so your modem is getting it's signal on a two way and not a three way splitter... sounds kinda silly but it can help.

i think you will be fine. the only thing of note is usally the cable company puts in a filter somewhere along the line. that would be best served being in the line to the cabel modem. other than that, go ahead and add splitters, thats what the cable comapany would do for you (for more $$ of course).
