Cable Modem Routing Problems!!!

My cable modem is working on my computer, and i want to network the net connection to my roomate's computers. The computers are not networked together, and have no networking software. I have the cat5 cables, a "D-Link" router, and each computer has a network card. Can someone please tell me how to network the computers by just using the router (i don't have and don't want to use a hub), and how to configure all the settings and stuff on the computers. People have been very kind in helping me, but they tell me things like "change the ip of this and that" and i am very new at this stuff. Thanks a lot. Oh yeah, my computer, the one that currently has the cable modem working on it, runs Win98, and the other computer runs Win2000 Advanced Server.

You can keep posting more and more; it will not help since it is impossible to post complete Instructions for network Configuration.

I can point you to few places, but you will have to do some learning.

Read every thing, if you don?t understand specific point then post and ask about some thing specific.

To check sharing:

All computers can have one, two, or three, of the following Network Protocols:

1. TCP/IP - must be installed for Internet
2. NetBEUI ? simple, no IP scheme, Internet safe (recommended as Default Protocol).
3. IPX/PX ? needed for some LAN games.

The three can reside together BUT - All computers must have the same Default Protocol..

All used Protocols are bound to the Ethernet Card.

All computers have the same Workgroup name.

Each computer has it own unique name.

You will not see a Computer in the Network Neighborhood, unless it shares something.

Make sure that you Logon as Client for Microsoft Network.

There are three places to be checked for sharing:

The first two are in Control Panel, Network.

1. The Protocol that you are using for sharing, has to be bound to Client for Microsoft Network, and Sharing is Checked in the protocol's properties menu.

2. The general File and Print Sharing has to be installed, and checked.

The third in "My Computer" folder.

3. Individual Drive or/and printer has to be checked for sharing.
Right click on the device to share, choose properties, click on the sharing Tab, check Shared As, and give it a name.

For printer:

Click My Computer, click on Printers, right click on the printer that you want to share, click on Properties, choose the Sharing tab, checked share, give it a name.

Important: The Shared Printer Drivers has to be installed on all computers that use this printer.

I don't think you can do it without at least one more NIC card. The basic proceedure is to use ICS (internet connection sharing) on the machine connected to the cable modem. The reason you need two NIC cards on that machine is that you have to have one connection to the modem and one connection to the other computer(s) which are sharing the connection (or to the d-link router in your case). Unless your d-link router is the model that has internet sharing built into it (I think it is the 704 or 804 model that does that).

Assuming that you don't have a router that does internet sharing, you will use ICS, which is a windows component in win 98 SE and above (so it is free) Search on this board or on google.com for ICS or internet sharing and you will find that this has been covered many times before (that's not a criticism, I am just to lazy to go through it all for you today).

Read the routers instructions. So long as your cable modem is an ethernet based modem (big phone looking jack for the wire to the computer, and not USB) it'll all work fine. If it's USB your router is a waste.

Also, read some of those links and bone up on networking terms a bit, we'll be able to help you out better once you've got more of the vocab down (and there's a test on Tuesday!). You will probably also find the answers to your questions if you can read through enough stuff.

He says he has a DLink router, so unless he's mixed up on what a router/hub/switch is this info is null. Not to try to insult you Louie1961a, but we don't want tytan0 to get more confused.
