It all depends on your area. In some places, DSL sucks and cable rocks. In other places, the reverse is true.
AT&T cable here use to be blazing fast but recently, things have slowed down during primetime. DSL on the otherhand usually provides a set speed and doesn't vary much. (assuming your ISP has adequate upstream bandwidth) Check out DSL Reports and see if you can find any info on your area.

Bozo is right. It all depends on your area. I have cable and it's quite fast. My friend?s cable connection on the other hand is slow. Same company, different results. He switched to DSL and is quite happy. You should ask your neighbors about there experience and go from there.

Yea, people in the same city can have different results with cable. All depends on how many homes in your neighborhood have cable. In a college area of town, many people probably have it and things can get slow. A friend of mine lives in a tubular home (trailer) and obviously, very few people in his area have cable modems and things are very fast for him.

yeah i would ask my neighbors who had it if it was available in my area but since my town is ghetto it aint and i cant stand my amazing d/l speeds of abour 2.6k!!!!!!!! so i must have one of the two , the faster the better

so far i have heard that adelphia in the town next to me is pretty fast and reliable 200k peak hours 1-2m off hours
but other areas havent been so lucky

dsl i dont know about we have alltell so i dont know how reliable there services are or stuff like that

Most ISPs (Cable or DSL) will offer you first month for free. Try both DSL and Cable and see which one is faster for you.

Well now, my downstream is 3000 - 4500 kbps and my upstream is 128 kbps on my cable modem and I pay 39.95, DSL offers me 768 kbps downstream and 128 kbps upstream for 49.95. I would also suggest that you try both and see which works best for you. also look into which supports static and non static IP addresses if your interested in hosting servers etc...

to tell u the truth, it's really a hit or miss. Cable is usually better in the beginning but can get slowed down drastically in time. The best thing to do is ask people who live around you about both cable and dsl, and even use both at people's houses and judge for yourself. I personally like cable a lot better. It is cheaper and faster where i live.

yeah but the only cable near me would most likely bee adelphia which i have heard really sux most of the time but some people around me i have heard d/l like 6 things at like 70k each but i think that not many really have cable around me but i know dsl would probably be better since the speed is constant but then again i dont know where the co nearest me is so that could also be a problem

why does it do that anyway? when we first got cable everything was pretty zippy... now its kinda lagging a bit... still better than 56k but geez... its slow compared to how it was before.

DSL has the potential to be much faster than cable.....IF your close enough to one of there stations. the farther away you are the slower it gets, you can call your DSL company and have them test your line. Also DSL gives you dedicated bandwidth, so no matter how many people in your area have it it wont slow you down when there all online. Cable on the other hand you have to share bandwidth with everyone else in your area who has it. so at peak times it can be as slow as a regular modem, but most of the time its pretty fast. I have Cable, I used to have DSL but they made some changes in my area that i didnt like so i swithched.

Cable is shared bandwidth, as soon as someone else on your circuit gets on, your bandwidth becomes less.

Depends on your provider. I've been on 56k for years waiting for broadband. Optimum Online Just became available and I can download a 6 Megabits. Some providers rock, some blow.

And circuit meaning your 'neighborhood' which could be anywhere from a dozen homes to a few hundred depending on where you are.

I was able to test both side by side. The DSL was faster....cable uploaded at 56K, AND the cable company (bless 'em) wanted a separate account for EACH PC! ($49.95x 3). My DSL provider lets me hook up to three PCs on the same account.

That's ridiculus. They obviously are trying to rip off (stupid) people by making them pay for an account on each computer. Internet Connection Sharing via software (Windows ICS) or hardware is the way to go.

In theory DSL should work better, but it all depends on the provider. I was shocked by how responsive my cable company (Charter) was when I wanted to install a cable modem two years ago. They were willing to come out the next day. On the other hand, three of my friends have DSL and each had to wait several weeks to get it installed.

Again, it all depends on the provider, but my bandwidth kicks the crap out of my three friends' DSL connections. I typcially see download speeds of 800kbps, while my friends all top out at 384kbps (still not bad though). Of course they can pay more money for higher bandwidth.

One other thing to consider -- my cable access is month to month, while DSL typically requires a service contract (sometimes 12 months). And don't forget that you have to be within 3 miles of the local switching office for DSL to even work.

Try first with cablemodem. Its cheaper.
I live near my school (where they have a lot cablemodems) and most time the cablemodem is faster than dsl.
It also doesn't need the phone line and you are always online.

in short:

DSL if you want Decidated, although typically slower overall, Bandwidth... ideal for applications such as Gaming, websurfing, downloading, etc.. uploading, file serving will be possible, but not very desireable

Cable if you dont care that your nextdoor neighbor can be running an mp3, gamez, warez and sucking all your bandwidth driaining it to well below the DSL speeds... the theoritcal is much higher then DSL.. but the chances of you EVER gettin that amount it are slim. Uploading is typically the benefit of Cable .. the fact that you can upload at a much much faster rate then DSL.

is that enough to make you want cable... i would say no

Again, that all depends on the provider. In Minneapolis, the stock DSL plan is 640 down, 256 up. You can pay a bit more for 640/640, all the way up to 7MBps if you are close enuf to the CO. Many cable companies cap uploads at 128, some more, some less.
